AMD Opteron (64-bit) - DC Projects?

With the upcoming Opteron CPU coming out next year, I wonder how it's going to favor on DC projects?

Who's going to be the first TA member to get their hands on one?

Presumably there will be support, but the extent to which remains unseen.

We could end up with poor support, ala Pentium4 and RC5 (If I remember correctly) - hopefully not though. 😉

With RC5 especially, I think there's a good chance they could pull a G4 on it. Since it's 64 bit, it might be able to support a different cracking method(such as bit-slicing) which would give it an enourmus boost in terms of performance. Even if it doesn't, it's still Athlon-based, and shouldn't suffer the weaknesses the P4 does.

With processing power ever increasing, even in this example, does anyone think they might have to reconsider the time limitations on cracking RC5?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one (or "the") goal behind RC5 established to test how long it actually takes to crack one message based on the processor power at the time the campaign first began?

Here we've been in excess of 1700 days of which we've seen huge gains on processor power. Wouldn't that offset the numbers when it (will it ever) completes?

I remember when RC5 began a PII 266 was the fastest thing on the market! :Q Eeeeuuu.. that thing sucks today.😀

I'm not sure how the opteron will perform, but I sure hope it does well in Folding@Home. 🙂

Something else though - with the move to 64 bit processors happening inevitably in the future sooner or later will come increased amounts of RAM in computers. I'm not sure, but perhaps would this mean that DC projects (especially those concerning molecular analysis and other scientific stuffs) could work on much more complex (and thus probably scientifically beneficial) work units?

Well I am on the list from my AMD rep to be one of the first to receive one when it comes out so..... 😀
