Im not going to settle for anything less than 2.4ghz stock, so in your opinion which should I buy I would like to reach 2.6-2.8ghz. Thanks.

If you can throw around that much money, you are best off spending a little extra on a 170 that's pretested and going to clock high.

Any Opteron can hit 2.6-2.8 GHz. I've had good ones and not so good ones, 2.7 Ghz is pretty much guaranteed if you have an aftermarket HSF.

IMO you should buy a 170 that's pretested, or just a good stepping. Good ones will clock past 2.9 Ghz with proper cooling.

The bottom line is that processor that are clocked higher by default do not necessarily overclock higher. Besides the FX series, speed binning doesn't seem to have much impact on AMD 64s. I've seen many 165s and 170s overclock further than 175s, a 180 probably wouldn't fare any better.

Neither.

Get a 170 or even a 165. Hell, the 3800+ (the new steppings) are even getting some good OC's.

Optys probably have a easier time of reaching those clocks but the X2s can do it as well. I'd probably go with the cheapest chip availble to achieve it. Look carefully at the steppings on the chips because some OC better than others apparently.

i think the reason why people are suggesting lower clocked chips such as the 170 or 165 is because these things will hit 2.6 to 2.8 in general.

so you do a cost analysis and find that an overclocked 170 will be more cost effective than an overclocked 180 at the same speed.

but if you MUST have the 12x mult, then i'd say go with the opty 180.

Just get whichever one is cheaper, since you really want to spend that much.

I would completely agree with Absolute0. The speed binning process that AMD uses actually can lean towards making the 'lower' binned products the faster clockers. Do a little research & note how the Athlon XP 2500+, and 2800+ would routinely OC far past what a 3200+, their top of the line would clock to.

If you absolutely MUST have one of the two, go with the Opty 180, as it's far more strenuously tested, and will, in all probability, clock higher than a 4800+.

As far as all that goes.... if you're willing and determined to shell out that much for a processor, get the FX60 & be a happy camper.
