AMD OC landscape changing?

While waiting, admittedly impatiently, for a good mobo based on the KT133A chip, I see a change acomin' with my choice of cpu. I had planned on getting the slower Duron for it's extraordinary OC potential, but with AMD's release of the Duron 850 and Celeron 800 and subsequent price decline, I'm thinking of going with an 850 TBird.

A month ago, I thought I had it all figured out. I would design for myself an upgrade path that would really work for me. First I'd get the MSI TURBO. That would allow me to later toss the Duron for a 1.5 Palomino. Happy days! I now see a price compression that I think signals that the Duron is going to be bumped by OCers for an Athlon for just "A Few Dollars More". Actually, this is good. Now I can wait longer for that upgrade to the Palomino for both greater speed and better price. Meanwhile I've still got one of the slowest desktop pc's in the free world.

Do I have it all figured out now? By the time I can get that mobo I'd mentioned, I may be looking at a P4.
Come on MSI, don't let that happen. ;)Oooo got somethin in my eye.

DONT get a p4 they have no software support availible at this time. I recomend to go with a 650 duron. My friend has one and he overclocks his at 950 stable.

Bupkus,

TBIRDS are not overclocking as well as Durons unless you are lucky enough to find one of the Dresden 750's. If DR TOM is correct, KT133A mobos are being delayed due to AMD changing the spec for 1.5gig (not sure if this is Palomino), to use 46amps !!. If this chip still uses 1.8v, thats over 80 watts.

While its true that high bandwidth, streaming apps are not being used much today, trust me, they will. Microsoft and Intel share future technology and I'm 100% sure that the P4 will have the advantage before very long.

Big guy Anand did a test with a Duron 750 and it overclocked to 1GHz no problem! And it was STABLE... Don't make any stupid discissions with going with a P4 they are no good! Durons and T-Birds are the way forward in this CPU industry!

DaddyG - are you saying "46" amps or do you really mean "4.6" amps (I hope hope the latter)! :( If it were the former, than it looks like we'd all need some serious re-wiring... ;) Still, 4.6 amps would be incredulous for a CPU!

I need to pop by Tom's and check it out... And although I obviously haven't done so yet, wouldn't it be in the best interest to get with the 0.15 or even 0.13 micron die processes that I keep hearing about (note that the Samuel2 Cyrix just released as 0.15 micron)? To at least get the volts required back down again...? :(

There are reasons to choose the Duron and there are reasons not to:

<< Duron 850 is also sharing the bad sides with its predecessors. It produces a lot more heat than Intel's Celeron or Pentium III processors and it is also lacking a thermal protection. The latter can easily lead to a sudden heat-death of Duron, in case the heat sink was not mounted properly or the heat sink's fan should cease to work. Besides that Duron used to suffer from the fact that it was requiring the same SocketA-platforms as Athlon, which happened to be targeted to the high-end segment, making them rather expensive. >>

More information at Tom's site.

The P4 is the first new CPU architect for years. AMD has yet to come up with something evolutionary. Until I understand why the Duron/Thunderbird consume 3-4 times more heat than Celeron/P3 for 10-20 % better performance, I will stay with the cooler CPU's.

The answer is, of course, Duron. The T-birds don't oc as often as the Durons, and the price is right. Even $40 difference in price now is 128mb of ram.
