AMD Motherboards w/ Onboard Graphics - Useful for multiple monitors?

I'm looking at building a new PC and will definitely be getting an external graphics card for gaming. However, I also make use of multiple monitors. Do the latest AMD motherboard chipsets (790G?) that have onboard graphics support using them to power 3rd or 4th monitors alongside a discrete card?

I believe so, as long as the feature is supported. If your BIOS automatically disables the onboard when it detects a card in the PCIe slot, you might be out of luck. I will admit I don't know the answer with certianty, but I'm assuming that you can with some boards.

My co-worker does it. He's using some kind of G965 board and a HD2900 Pro.

I have no idea what board it is... looked like Gigabyte at a quick glance.

ATI's IGPs support a feature called surround view. When enabled in the BIOS, if an ATI video card is installed, the onboard video stays active and can be used for multi-display output. I've seen it used for three digital displays (two from a discrete video card and one from the onboard)... it may work with four displays though I've not seen that tried.

I had an older RS482 motherboard that supported the feature and I have an Asus M3A78-EM (780G) board that also has the option in the BIOS. Just turn it on, pop in a Radeon of some sort and then configure the multiple displays with Catalyst Control Center.
