Why do some socket A motherboards (on NewEggs site) say this

Athlon XP/ Athlon/ Duron/ Sempron

And some just say this

Athlon XP/ Athlon/ Duron

they probably just took it from what it says on the box, but it could be that some older boards wont support the sempron without a bios update

its not a good idea to trust the "description" from any site where you buy pc parts. go right to the manufacturer if you have any questions and find out exactly what the board supports.

They never updated the info for the item. They don't update the photographs either. If you would like a list of Sempron compatible boards just check AMD's site or look at Zipzoomfly because they generally update their info.

There still are some socket-A boards that don't do 166 MHz CPU bus (PC-Chips M811, for example), and/or don't have a BIOS update available that recognizes Semprons correctly.
