AMD Mobile 2500+ = AMD 3200+ in Desktop?

In response to a request for a motherboard recommendation, an ostensibly tech-savvy member of another board stated:

Assuming that your RAM is DDR400, and the video card is AGP...

Bang for buck:

Abit NF7-S Revision 2 (Not NF7-S2)
Mobile Athlon XP 2500+
CPU Fan Rated at 3400+ or better for Socket A.

When you run the Front Side Bus (FSB) at 200MHz (400MHz DDR) to match the RAM, you will instantly have an Athlon XP 3200+, that runs cooler than the desktop version of the chip. (You may have to bump CPU Voltage in the Bios from 1.5 to 1.575 or 1.6, which is still less than the Desktop Version of 1.65 volts)

That's a real good deal right there and easy to do.

Can this possibly be true?

As Acanthus said, it's not guaranteed, but you have a VERY GOOD chance to hit 2.3Ghz or 2.4Ghz with a mobile chip and the right hardware. My 2600+ mobile currently runs at 2.5Ghz (11.5x215).

if youre looking for bang for the buck i would ditch that and go with an athlon 64 setup.

Actually the A-XP M 2500+ and a Socket A mobo is better bang for the buck than an A64 setup. Though not as upgradable, it's still cheaper.

skt754 Sempr0n 2800+ $87 shipped

DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb-$105 shipped

the Sempr0n is as likely to hit 2.3ghz+ in that DFI as a mobile sktA is to hit 2.4ghz in the NF7-s and be significantly faster platform for gaming. X-bit used the 2600+ on the DFI and got 2.5ghz and the extra cache on the 2800+ will make it even faster overall. Either 1.6ghz Sempr0n is a winner though, the only thing sktA has going for it is Soundstorm, and by the time you add the cost of the cooling for the mobile you spent as much as the faster Sempron setup. Also The DFI will be perfect for dropping in a used A64 that you will be able to pick up really cheap later for 64bit windows. sktA is dead for everything but HTPC IMHO

Here is that x-bit review text

You're trying to say this:
AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2500+, 266 FSB, 512K Cache, 45 Watt - OEM: $85 shipped

Is a better bargain than this???
AMD Sempron 2600+ 1.6GHz, 128KB L2 Cache, Socket 754 Processor - Retail: $79.99 shipped

And what's your "bang for the buck" socket A motherboard? Here's the 754 mobo that's best bang for buck (includes 300+ fsb overclockability):

EPOX "EP-8KDA3I" NVIDIA nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL: $67.24 shipped

Or if you want 8-channel sound instead of 6 and gigabit ethernet instead of plain 10/100:
EPoX "EP-8KDA3J" nForce3-250Gb Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL: $73.74 shipped

Socket 754 Mobo + CPU = $147.23 shipped

the multiplier on the mobile 2500+ is 14x, so putting that to 200fsb would = 2800mhz (crazy!)

but you can easily, EASILY do 11 x 200 = AXP3200+.

Hi~

I am using mobile athlon 2400+ 35W running @ (12.5*200)=2500mhz 1.8V very stable with an epox 8Rda+ pro motherboard.

I thinnk should be no problem to run a mobile athlon @ 2200 (3200+ PR) @ 1.5 or 1.6V.

Best regards
Alfred.

Certainly, but that isn't the issue here. He is being recommended a sktA solution when skt754 Sempr0n is a better value now. He should be looking at a 1.6ghz Sempy+The Epox or DFI and overclocking that platform.
