AMD & Memory Type Question

Not knowing what forum to put this in, I'm relegating it to general hardware.

Can AMD based motherboards, like the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium, work with DDR2 memory? I know it won't be as fast but can the MB at least use the RAM and just deal with it accordingly? I don't know what either type, DDR or DDR2, look like so I don't know if the pins are different. If they are, i know I can't use it. But... if they pins are the same, can the MB use it but just not support everything DDR2 has to offer? Will the MB just adjust the timings and the frequencies or will it just not even boot because the BIOS doesn't recognize it?

Any help is appreciated in advance.

AMD chipsets do not currently support DDR2. It's coming with their new socket, next year.

but I do see HP small form factor already using DDR2 for company PCs

Intel chipset though

Based on the tests that we?ve seen here today, AMD?s reluctance to move to higher bandwidth DDR2 offerings makes a lot more sense. The plain fact of the matter is that at the current clock speeds at which the Athlon 64 and X2 line are running, most desktop applications see virtually no benefit from higher bandwidth memory. It is possible that server usage models may show a greater performance boost, but it is highly unlikely for a mission critical server to be equipped with anything that isn?t an officially supported standard - especially memory.
