i want to upgrade my system already, and I am waiting for the this new socket. When are they coming out. I hope its early next year, like after christmas.

And with it comes the transition to DDR2 for AMD. I'm not 100% sure how excited I am about that, though. :|

It will probably be mature in price and speed at that time.

The M2 CPUs are likely to be available at higher speed grades to the S939 versions. This will help get earlier adopters to the new socket.

If we look back to the way that the Athlon 64 memory controller improved DDR1 performance I see no reason why AMD can't give DDR2 the kick up the proverbial backside that it needs as well.

By then we could well be looking at 3-3-3-8 timings at 800Mhz which would be better than the current 2-2-2-5 at 400MHz that we can currently acheive.

hopefully AMD will use DDR2-800 (pc2-6400), I thought they were going to go with DDR2-667 (pc2-5400). how much of a difference do you think this move would make?

We already have SATA II and I read a rumor about PCI-E 2, and we'll have HD DVD (or Blue Ray discs if Sony gets its way which it probably won't).

The odd thing is they want to have a single core Sempron. That gives us a hint what they plan to do with prices though. They'll keep somewhat of a premium on the darn Athlon X2s.

I know AMD has said they plan to use DDR2 667, however the current revision Athlon 64's can hope with DDR 500 so DDR2 800 should be considered as a possibility. Personally I'm looking forward to M2 as it will almost certainly represent my next major upgrade, the last being an early adoption of nForce 4.

I can say for sure from what I heard that the AMD M2 'Windsor' core will be released on Q2 next year. I will be supporting DDR2, I don't know which speed though. The Windsor core will be rated as an AMD 5000+.

I am going to be a guineapig!
