AMD launches new Opterons for Socket 939

Old news. Unfortunately they're only Opteron 1xx.

Well I don't know of any dual socket 939 boards. If there were I'd think there'd be someway to get dual A64s defeating the purpose of Opterons.

Although this would mean Opterons no longer being limited by registered memory. However it kinda defeats the purpose of the Opteron, how much different would it be from a comparable A64? Why even bother with Opteron? Sounds more like a budget server or workstation solution as the Opteron name is more closely associated with work than play.

exactly, i don't see the point...

doesn't more defeat the purpose of the FX line than the opterons? I reckon the 939 FX's were just 939 opterons for the most part.

Well, early reviews of the first Opterons vs the first A64s showed the Opterons performing better than the equivalent A64 in many server apps like databases etc. This was though to be due to different tweaks being applied to the memory controllers of the different chips to try to optimize them for their respective markets.

This change isn't too useful for us as we understand that they are all basically the same chips. For your typical business purchaser, however, they might only know that for workstations they want an Opteron or Xeon. This does allow for Opteron systems for applications that don't require ECC.
