I just bought a laptop from FS/T, and unfortunately, it isn't working, so I'm going to have to send it back and buy a new one. :(

Since I need this laptop before the 29th of this month, I'm considering going with a Compaq rather than waiting for a Dell deal to come up...however, the best Compaq deals, it seems, are all AMD-based right now.

I'm wondering about the viability of AMD chips w/PowerNow; I've heard decent things about them, but wanted to make sure before I made the big plunge.

Recommendations?

This is what I'm looking at, for $1099.

Also looking at this, $929

Dang, looks like a nice deal although they *may* consume a little more power than an intel/celeron based laptop therefore reducing battery time but I'm an AMD man so go for it:D

I was kinda wondering the same thing. Do you have to be more concerned about power consumption or heat??

BTW, I'm an AMD fan as well. The last 2 desktops I built are AMD machines.

I've been reading some reviews, and the battery time doesn't sound significantly worse than it does in a comparable P3 or Celeron.

I'm really starting to lean this way...

According to the a reviews in PC Mag, laptops with AMD inside don't compare well.

Compaq Duron 1gb has a score of 19.0 in Business Winstone 2001 while a Dell 1gb Celeron has a score of 32.2.

Battery life: 2:11(Compaq) vs 3:35(Dell)

Same battery? The laptop I had (Toshiba 1005-s157) had a battery time of sub-2hrs with a Celeron 1.06.

Different batteries in the two laptops.

From another review by PC Mag, The Business Winstone 2001 (best performance mode) are:

Compaq 1.3gb Athlon4 = 21.7, battery life: 2:13
Dell P4-M 1.7gb = 37.2, battery life: 2:29
Dell P3-M 1.2gb = 36.3, battery life: 2:19

The Dell laptops are larger than the Celeron one.
