AMD laptop questions...(gateway and sony show no models with amd!!!)

if i were you, i would SERIOUSLY consider an intel CENTRINO. Look at the benchmarks on anand's review of them!! it keeps up with a desktop clocked (iirc) 800mhz faster than it!! It has serious Horse power unlike the other clock rampant intel cpu's it would basically destroy and AMD mobile unit clock for clock!

I can't believe it took 25 replies before someone brought up Centrino. 🙂

But don't forget about the exceptional battery life, and built-in WiFi.

Yes, I completely agree. In fact I was just looking at Dell's small business Centrino notebook prices today.

if yur lucky hopefully you'll see via kn400 based athlon systems in the next few months

if you do go the AMD route try not to get the older via chipset one
atleast get the one with that ati chipset

most athlon systems come with that cheesy via chipset and integrated graphics that's why they are budget

If you look, it was mentioned b4, but only for significant battery life, no one even thought to say that its IPC is amazing even compared to AMD, Intel created an amazing processor, if this is an idea of what is to come from Intel's next processor, it could be a fight for both.

The 700 series of compaq laptops was junk. The 900 series is much nicer. The new 2100 (AMD based) are very good machines. While the centrino based coupters are very good machines, if you get an AMD, the Sony FR130 is tough to beat..... KN266 chipset (same memory controller that the KT266a) plus discrete graphics (GeForce 420 Go). Granted, not the best graphics card, but because the memory bandwidth is not shared, you get a potent machine.

The ATI chipset is the best bet for mainstream computing. The Sony will do OK for your applications. Remember, the KT266a was the king of the hill for socket A during several months.... the kn266 is the same memory controller, which beats the IGP320 handily. Just replace the standar hard drive with a travelstar 40gnx and you got some serious toy.....

I am surprised by the fact that there are NO reviews of the Sony laptop powered by AMD. If you get the Sony, you can be the first reviewer to provide some benchmarks 🙂

For less than $1300 it is a great machine.
