That's right, folks; I'm stepping one foot out of the Darkness and into an AMD-based LAN box:). I'll need some moral support and a few hands to hold, I'm sure, so be ready for my trials and tribulations;)!

Setup:

Mac G3 blue/white tower case
Antec TrueBlue TruePower 480W PS
AthlonXP 1700+
Albatron KM18 Pro NForce2, mATX
2 x 256MB Crucial PC2100
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
WD 120GB harddrive

I'll probably use LAN and sound off of the chipset, since it's only a LAN box. OS will most likely be Windows2003 Server:p.

Wish me luck:Q!

update1:

Several items:):

1) I didn't have to install an OS, just booted into my previous i845G install of WinXP Pro and added the chipset drivers:)
2) The motherboard offers no option for Vcore, Vdimm, or multiplier adjustment:(
3) The cpu went all the way to 185 fsb, 2030MHz, before the RAM crapped out; I'm going to see about manually setting the multiplier on the cpu;)
4) I tested some HyperX PC3500 in the system this morning and it wouldn't even boot at 200fsb:(; I don't believe this is a Vcore issue

I'll post some benchies later, MemTesting the memory to 189 while I'm at work today so I'll know if there are any more inches to be gained here (I don't want to spend $160 buying more/better RAM), will find a way to post some pics, too:).

update2:

trying a 2100+ (13x multiplier, 1.65Vcore) tonight, will post results:)

update3:

locked the AGP to 66, Prime'd all night at 1980MHz (180fsb), 30C idle 40C load; not bad considering no Vcore adjustment, flashing the 9500 Pro to o/c'able bios next:)

update4:

the 2100+ ran too hot so I'm sticking with my 1700+, flashed the 9500 Pro bios successfully (whew!;)), posted links for pics:

Onboard LAN and sound are great on nForce2 boards. I use them on my Epox 8RDA+ and I am very happy.

wow, that was easy:)! I didn't even have to reinstall an OS, just booted up into the WinXP Pro install I had running a P4 system and installed the NForce2 chipset drivers, easy as pie! My crummy Crucial PC2100 started to crap out at 185, 2.5-3-3-7; lucky, I guess, since there's no Vcore or Vdimm and this cpu was coolly running at 2035MHz:D! I'm going to score some more RAM soon and see where my XMS3200c2 will take me in the meantime;).

Dang... what's going on...? First Technonut has PC2700 value ram hitting 460+DDR, and now you have Crucial PC2100 doing 390DDR??? Grr....

Everything looks good, but I question your choice of board... :p I thought you'd go with something like NF7 variation... (not that it stopped you from oc'ing the rig... :D)

I'm going to score some more RAM soon and see where my XMS3200c2 will take me in the meantime.
They're not yours yet, buddy. :p:p:p

Where did you get the G3 case? It would be TOO COOL to P.O. the Mac users I work with by having a PC in a Mac Case!

Great case though!

So... where'd you get it?

got any buddies that work for an advertising agency;)? if not, they (and G4 cases) can be had off of eBay for less than $100 if you're patient:). if I pick up a G4 case, you want my G3?

Nice setup there :D
Would you mind posting it in to my case mods Thread(see sig for link)
Also why would you use Windows 2003 Server for the OS?

Kudos to you. That is one sweet looking computer.

Lately I have been hating my computer because it is less than portable with a heavy case and 19" monitor. It's cool to see people putting fast computers into smaller, more portable cases. I think my next machine will be SSF with a flat panel just so I can carry it around easier.

is that before or after a bunch of the folks at the LAN ask me where to get them a G3/4 case;)? actually, the handles on the case make it pretty portable and I enjoyed the project of converting the case to an x86-based format (it wasn't easy!):)

thanks for the complement:). I have a Samsung 17" LCD which has a base that folds flat, making it easier to carry to the LAN's, too;)
