Can anyone tell me if I got "you know what"...I purchased a system and the processor is a AMDK6-3D, how does this compare to the Pentiums, etc and can I upgrade easily to a newer (faster) if I am not pleased with my current speed...I have a HP Pavillion

Thanks:eek:

It depends on your motherboard and the current speed of your processor. The maximum speed available on any Socket 7 board is 600Mhz (or a little higher if you can successfully overclock the FSB) and the maximum produced speed for a K6-2 is 550Mhz and for a K6-3+ is 450. If you are already at, or close to these speeds, then there's not much you can do to upgrade, although the K6-3+ is quite a bit faster than the K6-2...

How much did you spend for this system, and when was it actually built? (Is it a new system, or did you buy it used?)

Oh, and to answer the other half of your question, the K6-2 is roughly equivalent to the Celeron and the K6-3+ is equivalent to a Pentium 2, although my K6-3+ overclocked to 600Mhz easily beats the PII 600 I have at work..

You can use any one of a number of programs, such as CPUID or SiSoft Sandra. Or, you can just pull out the CPU itself and look at what the chip says. Personally, if you feel comfortable working with the insides of your computer, I'd go with pulling out the CPU and seeing what is stamped on it, since CPUID and Sandra are not always 100% accurate with their results.
