WinME is suck!

XP should work but you should get more ram. Another 128 mg of PC133 will work. To make XP more responsive you should limit the eye candy a bit. You could make XP default to quasi win98 appearance, but it looses some of its uniqueness. Hopefully the board is ACPI compliant.

Win2k will work like a charm on there but it won't have the compatibilty of XP. Win2k is fussy about software.

I have tried both on a K6-2 500 and Epox G-M board with 256 mg pc133 and found Win2k more snappy, but less flexible with software. XP was a little slower, but both were very stable.

With onboard video be carefull how much ram you designate to video. Too much (64 mg on newer all-in-one boards) will hamper the system's performance.

Win XP will run fine on your K6-500 although another 128meg of ram would help. I first played with XP on a K6-2 350 w/192megs for three months testing out if I wanted to use it on my main rig. If you run it as windows classic it does very well.

i have the same rig practically (550mhz) and winxp is quite sluggish... more ram will prolly do the trick... its kinda heavy tho so dont expect much... i like windows ME and u know what they say 'if it aint broke dont fix it...'

Win98SE is a very good OS for your nephew to play with.

If you wish to speed up XP-

System Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings>Visual Effects>Adjust for best performance

then

Display Properties>Appearance>Windows and buttons:Windows Classic style

1. Under display properties, click the appearance tab, and select Windows classic style under 'windows and buttons'

2. 98SE or 2000pro would be good, although software under 2000 might run into problems. Avoid ME.

I agree. I had XP on my mothers pc with a amd k62 450 with 256 m ram and it ran fine. I recently obtained a k62 500 and put in there and there was quite and improvement.

I would definitely recomend that you have 256 mb ram + "64 mb ram for the shared vieo" =320 mb total ram. Actually 512 mb would be even better.
