I read the Anandtech article (http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1406) on K6-2+ and K6-3+ processors. Supposedly, "The chips, which are rather easily available on the retail market in OEM form, can be found at prices very close to the original K6-2 and K6-3 prices, making the appeal of the + series chips even greater."

Does anyone know where I could buy a K6-3+ 550 ??

Help!!

The highest speed i have ever seen sold is 450. They can easily be overclocked though. My dad has bought 2 and one does 600 @ 2.1v and the other 550 @ 2.0v. As for where you can find them, i know tiger direct had them along with the k6-2+'s but this was over a month ago.

i got mine thru the ebiquitous bidding network. i think they are at tiger direct. but they dont come as 550's, you have to oc them to that, or beyond. they come as 450's. AND your motherboard bios has to recognize the different K6III+ cpu. my tyan took a little encouraging to do so. but it works great at 550 and "beyond"!!

Why does the Anandtech review say AMD K6-3+ 550 ?? Don't you think it would mention if it was a 450 overclocked?

Good question. the amd website does list production of a k6-3+(here) but ive never even seen one mentioned besides AMD's site and anand's review.

K63+ is for mobil (laptop) machine which may or may not work on your desktop motherboard. I bought one before but it didn't work on my FIC 503A. Traded it to my friend and he had it running at 600Mhz on his Asus mb.

I know it's for laptops, but if you read the Anandtech article, and even the Tomshardware.com article...K6-2+ and K6-3+ processors are supposed to work great on desktop computers, especially with my motherboard (EPOX MVP3G2). Did you have a K6-3+ 550? Where did you get it from?

I've got a K6-III+ 450MHz @ 500MHz on my ancient Asus T2P4 motherboard. Socket 7, not Super7. The Bios recognized my K6-III, but for this it calls it "-MMX". No matter, the benchmarks show it's still performing!

I got mine on E-bay for ~$80, but I've seen bids going up to $120. Take a look. I've seen K6-2+ on retail sites, but haven't seen the 3+.

As with most newer things, sometimes a Bios upgrade is required.
A simple check in forums and newsgroups will tell you if it works.
The 503A was one of the first to ship with the newer 1.8v CPU voltage settings.
K63+ 450 @ 616MHz, or 600MHz, works great here in FIC 503A. Also works in 503+ boards.

Once you get past 400 on those chips, they get really expensive. Cheaper to upgrade to a Duron board and chip in the long run.

I picked up 4 of those K6III+ 450 chips for 39.99 each at PC Liquidators.com about 4 months ago. I have not seen them on there for a while now. I have all of them running at or above 550. These are nice chips. But like everyone else, I have not seen the K6III+ 550 chip mentioned before. I have heard of the K6II+ 550 though.

I just find it rather strange that nobody has ever seen one of these chips (K6-3+ 550), but Anandtech and Tom's Hardware both mentioned them in their reviews of the K6-2+ and K6-3+ processors.

Are they referring to some kind of secret underground black market processor, or does this thing actually exist? BTW, it IS mentioned on the AMD website, so I guess they must have made at least one of them.

True true. The AMD K6-3+ was meant for laptops and desktops but AMD killed the desktop line so it wouldn't compete with the athlon/duron. So some motherboards added support before it was cancelled. Like my server at home www.voltronforce.net runs off of a AMD K6-3+ 450 with win2000 and 256MB of ram, FIC PA2013.

I just tracked down the K6-3+ 550s www.computeradjusters.com has them. They don't have the price on the site. I saw elsewhere where they want $150 for them. I am deciding what to do myself. You can also find them through Pricewatch.com, I have seem them listed by companies here for around $159. The price is getting up around what you can buy a lot more power for and then you have to go through the iffy flashing of the BIOS, I am losing interest in the K6-3's (Everyone has to make up their own mind.)
