ok ok yes I know I'm driving a "classic" but low $ keep me in the slow lane...but I'm trying, so here's my
question ... does anyone know how to take this processer to the max ?? what I'm running is asus p5-a
board w/384 mbs ram running xp-pro ... problem is turning it up anywhere past 4.0 fsb ..will not boot...
also how much of a gain would be had by running a 450 k6-3+ cpu ( I have an option to purchase one for
$40) am I getting ripped off or should I just start saving for something a little more current? as I said
before low $ and impatence & the desire to tweak super 7 as far as I can keeps me from way to many
nights sleep ...anyones help would be much appreceaded (please forgive the spelling) Thanks :

$30 tops for that cpu. Newegg had em for $25 but there all gone as of 7 months ago.

Dude seriously you can get a asus a7n8x-e deluxe for $90, and retail socket a sempron 2300+ for $60, and some ddr333/400 for $90

Well, you really should upgrade, but I've read stories in the past about K6-3+ overclocks, and some people were able to get their ~500Mhz CPUs up to 700-800Mhz, due to the die shrink. In fact, some people were running those instead of early Slot-A Athlons, because of the on-die cache. The mobo's L2 cache then becomes effectively L3 cache too.

But the overall bus interface on those old Socket7 systemss, along with everything else, is really limiting nowadays. You would be much better off, with a Duron 1.6Ghz and a cheapy Biostar NF2-based mobo with integrated video, even, instead of your Socket7 system.

When I was a kid, I had a plan to build a boat that would be powered by several electric trolling motors. A complex system of gears and pulleys would steer the boat and link the three motors. Someone finally pointed out that a single 5 HP Evinrude would do the job better. In the same vein, a college friend observed a guy washing and waxing his rust bucket of a car, offered this witticism, "Try and you might, but you just can't polish a turd"

It's time to put her down Katmando, she's served you well but its time...

Purchase an ASUS A7VT terminator from Newegg with a Sempron 2300+ and 256MB of PC2700 memory for about $210 shipped. Use your HD to save $$$. It has on board Video and Sound so you can hold off there too. The case comes with a 50x CD Rom and floppy. So you'll need a burner, but you'll be MORE than happy.
