AMD K6-2/533 Won't run in Desktop System?

Has anyone tried to run a K6-2 533 cpu in a desktop system? The 533 cpu is technically a laptop CPU, however, I can think of NO reason technically why it would not run on a desktop system...but it won't!

CPU Specs: AMD K6-2/533AFX, 2.2V core, 3.3V I/O #A0005DPIW. (note: these specs are the SAME as 350 to 550 MHz K6-2's). AMD does NOT lock the multiplier nor the frequency of the K6 series of CPU's.

The Case:

My son has a Soyo 5EHM mobo which will support upto a 550 MHz CPU (has 5.5x). I had a 533 K6-2 and tried it, clocked at 450 (changed NO settings), about 2 months ago. The system wouldn't post. Insert 450 back, post, insert 533, no post. I even bumped the voltage to 2.3V, no POST. I figured the CPU was toast.

Today, I rec'd a K6-2/500 and another 533. I set the multiplier to 5x and popped in the 500, POSTED right up and reported 500MHz, no prob. Insert NEW 533, NO POST!! Insert 500 back, post, insert NEW 533, no post. So much for my theroy of a bad CPU. NO WAY do I have TWO bad 533's.

IDEAS???

Yep...my bad, forgot to add that, newest bios installed. :D That really shouldn't matter, it should have detected it as a 450 or a 500 depending on the multiplier I had set at the time. I was hoping to run it at 550 but I wanted to see it post at just a 500 first. There's no way for me to run it at 533 (66x8) and I certainly don't want to.

Thanks

533 would indicate that it is designed to run ay 66mhz FSB. I wonder if the cpu isnt able to handle the higher fsb speed... I wouldnt expect anything made to work with a 66mhz fsb to work at 100...

Well, I don't know why the chip won't work but the 533 IS a desktop CPU. The last three K6-2s manufactured were the 500, 533 and 550. The 533 runs on the strange FSB of 97mhz, not 66. It'll run on 66 if you wanna underclock it, but it was designed to run 5.5*97. I don't know why it's not running. It should at least overclock to 550 easily. The K6-2+ and K6-3+ are the mobile chips that people have been running in desktops.

My Celly 366 runs on 100 fsb great. I can even run it at 105 without problems

Just took another look at soyo's site and only version 1.3 of yoour board will support the 533MHz chip. Take a look here. What version do you have? Don't know why you can't fool the board by under or over clocking the chip.

Thanks for ideas guys.

Azratax - With K6-2 cpu's the fsb doesn't matter. I've built many K6 systems with alternative bus speeds using these. As long as the multiplier is reasonably set so the OC speed is not excessive, they will run fine. With K6 all you have to worry about is voltage and final cpu clock speed.

Vyle - Whoa, didn't realize it was a 97 fsb cpu. Similar to their 95 fsb 375 cpu they put out a while back.

I think this is a v1.2 EHM board, but again, it really shouldn't matter for an under-clocked cpu.

WOW, me thinks I have 2 bad cpu's!!??:Q

I still have an FIC 503+ mobo that I had a 333 K6-3 that I upgraded to 450 K6-3+ and I had to flash a beta bios (j34330). The board itself would take up to a 550-K62 but FIC specifically said the 503+ WILL NOT support the 533 (I guess because of the 97 MHz bus). I realize that you don't have the FIC board but maybe your board/bios has the same restrictions as the FIC does. My 450 K6-3+ would not post at 450 on the board before I flashed the bios even though there's support for the K6-3 line you would think it should work but it wouldn't even post until I flashed it to je4330. Your bios as it sits just doesn't support the 533.
