AMD K6-2 450 on SiS 530 MB, Boot up halts with CPU speed error

MustISO

I just build this machine a months ago. When it boots it goes to 150Mhz instead of 450Mhz. It says to press F1 to go into the setup. I go in there and the CPU is set for Bus: 100Mhz, Clock: 4.5 and Volts: 2.2. Are these the wrong settings for this processor? After I go into the bios and set the speed, it works a few times and then does it again. The motherboard is an ECS with a SiS 530 chipset.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know if this will help but I had a similar problem with a k6-2 500/PC Chips M598, swapping the AT keyboard for a new ps/2 model and using an adapter fixed my troubles. Funny thing was, there were never any keyboard errors or beeps, and the keyboard worked fine on an ASUS board later.

Check your CMOS battery, it seems like the settings are not being saved. Also check the ECS website for an updated BIOS (if possible, considering your mobo is probably discontinued).

Diehardware, I'll check the keyboard thing but it's probably a long shot.

RanDum72, I have updated the BIOS to the latest and greatest. I considered the battery but no other settings are cleared (i.e. time or any custom settings). Even when I go into the BIOS after the CPU error, it's still showing my original settings. All I have to do is hit F10 and save it again. I'll try a new battery just in case.

Is my setting of 100Mhz x 4.5 correct for this cpu? Is the voltage of 2.2 correct? (I got the volts off the cpu itself so I think it's okay)

The settings are correct but the mobo/BIOS implementation may have bugs. I used to have a PCChips (now owned by ECS) that, for some reason, would say 400mhz on the BIOS but is was actually running at 350mhz (according to Windows and various programs like AMD's own CPU ID checker). Try other settings such as 400mhz or even 500mhz just to see if it holds it.

Yeah, I check the manual again and the CPU settings seem fine.
I'm also going to get an application that will read the CPU speed in Windows so I can make sure it's running at what it says it is.

i remember when i put a k6-2 in a 95 system, I HAD to download a small patch off the microsoft website for the k6-2, i tried it without it, and on boot up i got some sort of error. i'm not sure however whether this applies to later versions of windows though
