ok, i've been massing around with my mom's old laptop, and the harddrive crapped out about a week ago and i'm replacing that, I noticed that the laptop uses a k6-2 450mhz cpu, i've been looking for somthing faster such as a k6-2+ 550mhz cpu that i found on ebay. NOTE: this is a k6-2+ mobile, will this cpu work in the k6-2 socket?

so the model is an hp pavillion n3350.

is this possible?

does anyone know where to get mobile k6-2s of higher clock speed that is not on ebay?

Hi,
They both use socket 7. Your limiting factors should be voltage and bios. The k62+ series uses 2.0 volts (less heat) instead of the 2.4 V common to the k62 series. If the 2.0 V or 2.1 V is aval. , and you can't boot , try booting at 300 Mhz. If this is possible , there are programs to boost the multiplier with software (power now) for the k6+ series (from 200 to 600 Mhz) at www.k6plus.com along with other k6 and k6+ optimizers.

I have a K6-2+ 500@550 running on a FIC503+ mainboard.

The only problem is to get the right bios with the "+" support.

so you don't think the laptop bios will reset the voltage to 2.0? even so, what if it does run the cpu at 2.2V, whats the harm in that, they are both .25micron chips

or do you think with a new bios i might be able the shift the voltage lower, i guess i could get hte chip try it and if it doesn't work, oh well... there is no harm in that right?

My K6+ is runninng at 2.3 Volts by choice , higher voltage allow easier overclock.

Voltage is not a problem , the "+" bios is a must because the "+" K6 have a third level cache; normal bios can handle only L1 and L2 cache.

If there is a bios with K6-III support can work also with K6-2+ and K6-III+

The K6-2+ is made in 0.18um.... the difference with the regular K6-2 is that the K6-2+ has 128 Kb of L2 cache on die..... the regular K6-2 had the L2 cache off-die on the motherboard. With the K6-2+, the cache in the motherboard becomes L3 cache.... So, the K6-2+ is like a baby K6-III

I think the upgrade is feasible, but as mentioned, the BIOS must support it.
