AMD is Willing To Make ’14nm FinFET’ GCN Based Mobile GPUs For The Right Customer

AMD is still open to making GPUs for the mobile market according to a statement by Raja Koduri (via ITWorld). The company sold off its mobile division to Qualcomm back in 2009, which uses the technology to make Adreno GPUs, but AMD has stated that if it is offered a particularly lucrative licensing agreement or custom chip deal – it will be willing to offer its services in the low-power GPU department.

Qualcomm has Adreno.... Apple has their own GPU.... Samsung has Mali.... Intel has their own GPU's....

Mediatek, what the hell are you waiting? Go and get the AMD GPU's to yourselves! More heat is not that important to you guys....

I expected AMD to make a GCN version for ARM when I saw the members of HSA foundation. I expected it for gpgpu market. Maybe it'll come to consumer market too if someone is interested.

K12 maybe will target tablets eventually or even mobile phones if they feel that have a chance...

Shouldn't there be a [rumor] or [site name] attached to that title?

BTW, of course, if someone waves tons of cash in front of you, you will make what they want.
Guess what, so will intel, nivdia, and loads of other places will do the same.

AMD has already stated they will custom make SoCs, and custom ARM based products as well.

I think you be missing the point. AMD are the only ones in a position to beat Qualcomm's Adreno 530 since well, they invented it in the first place. This is like a feeler, hello anyone want to supplant the S7, we can help.

Biggest problem is that they'll likely be horribly late to market and irrelevant by the time they do.

*cough* Tegra *cough*

Why do you think AMD is the only one in that position?
Yes, they sold away the mobile stuff for a small amount of cash, but, both nvidia & intel have the tech, and can compete with the Adreno line if they wanted to.
Nvidia already has the tegra line of GPUs, and if they weren't so expensive, they could have been a huge player.
I think the biggest issue for most is, they want something that is backwards compatible with the Adreno line, and then, the game always is, best bang for the buck.

Woulda shoulda coulda, hi Tegra. If they could have done anything except lose money they would have.

It looks like it was more than a rumor that Mediatek came close to use GCN1.2 to power its 2015-2016 chipsets.

Even if the deal don't earns for AMD a lot of Bilions, the positive market-mindshare effect of use GCN on ARM phones/tablets will be BIG.

tegra failure came because it was a power eating chip you couldnt play 20 mins of anything on 3d that the tablet would run out of battery

AMD has said themselves that they don't want to get involved in the mobile space because margins are too low

meaning that the only way they're getting involved in mobile is if someone is overpaying them to do so

When you lack cash flow, you are willing to do a lot of things.

Meh, Raja is just saying that they are open to the possibility if someone makes them the right offer. Doesn't sound like they're actively pursuing it, which is a smart move.

It's probably just a way of stating they have the tech and IP to pull it off if someone wanted them to.
