They're speculating that it's about 45nm or else outsourcing of CPU production. Is AMD even allowed to outsource their CPU production?

I have no idea what this could be about, however I somehow doubt that the inquirer's thoughts are correct.

I'm curious too.. As a shareholder, it pisses me off when I know for certain that others in the marketplace have already heard about the information I can only speculate..

Hopefully, they're gonna say the new Radeons have been selling better than originally predicted.

What I'm wondering is: Could AMD very quickly scale the Phenom down to 55nm (linear shrink), and then just fab them wherever the new Radeons are being produced? (TSMC I would assume)

I know they have some sort of deal with Intel which states that they need to produce a large percentage of their X86 CPUs in-house.

With AMD continuing to produce K8s through 2008, they might be able to fab a small number of K10s on the 55nm process using TSMCs fabs.

The rumors I have heard is AMD rushed the Phenom through development and it has a flaw in the design and it is the fix that makes the processor so slow. In fact Germany was subsidising the development. So they are not even competing on the free market.

ROFL.. attack AMD for not competing on the free market? Intel paid Dell not to sell AMD chips.. is that free market? Intel was found guilty in Japan, South Korea, and has an ongoing investigation with the EU for monopoly competition.

I would suspect Hector Ruiz is out, its too soon to make a product announcement, whatever it will be it will be really bad or really good

AMD should have launched a 3.0GHz part but ended up with 2.4 Ghz with issues, someone has got to take the hit for that.

Its also possible they hired on someone special.

I would suspect that you're right. If so, it still didn't happen soon enough.

Actually, the fastest Phenom released so far is a 2.2 Ghz part, and the fastest Barcelona Opteron was a 2.3 Ghz part. And you're right, heads should definitely be rolling, starting with Hector.

AMD just received a couple $100 million to aid them in their "economic blunder" from some euro group i think; it wouldn't be about that would it? Layoffs maybe? downsizing? They're being hit pretty hard, and if those new ATI cards arn't selling as well as Nvidia, then...? Well I don't know.

Half of the people that post regularly in this forum seem to know quite a bit more about CPU's than Hector Ruiz, if you ask me.

Based alone on this announcement, analysts expect the stock to drop below $1 by week's end.

I'll bet Hector has a better sense of humor, at least. Yeah, I know, he's laughing all the way to the bank. I do know a lot of forum regulars were predicting AMD's demise way back in 1999, with also some talk in 2002. We'll see.

What does his bank account have to do with how he has virtually run AMD into the ground, or his sense of humor? By the way, I've never predicted AMD's demise, ever. Not on this forum, or any other forum, or anywhere outside of any internet forum.

Yes, they can outsource up to either 15 or 20%.

I thought an article not long ago said they were discontinuing the 6000/6400+ and coming out with more low/mid range models using the Brisbane core. It didn't say anything about them making any faster X2s so I figured the Phenoms (once fixed) would be their sole top of the line.

What could feasibly surprise us all from AMD. The only thing that AMD could possibly do to surprise me would be a merger announcement, or perhaps that they decided to call for the Christ's help in person to buy Intel. Seriously guys ... even if it's just 45nm or a mass shipment of Barcelona despite the errata issue why would that be surprising considering Intel figured out the 45nm part long ago ?

Hector Ruiz is apparently scheduled to speak at AMD's Financial Analyst Day on Thursday, so it seems a little unlikely they'd get rid of him right before that.

I find it interesting that the INQ was alerted to the story by system integrators and distributors. That means only one thing -- the "surprise" is most likely about product; either regarding supply or some new SKU.

If it was about Hector Ruiz, you would expect a "heads-up" to Wall Street and investors; not channel partners.

Just my hunch.
