Ticker: AMD
YTD stock performance: -56%
Market cap: $1.8 billion
Fortune 500 rank: 378

In 2011, AMD (AMD, Fortune 500) announced sweeping layoffs that would cut 1,400 positions, about 10% of its workforce. The move was dramatic, but it wasn't the end of the chipmaker's problems. In the fall the company announced another round of layoffs, this time slashing 15% of positions from the payroll.

The slumping global market for PCs has hit AMD hard. The company is the second-largest producer of PC processors, and was seemingly blindsided by consumers' movement away from computers toward smartphones and tablets. It's now scrambling to catch up by focusing on the mobile market. The new strategy goes big on chips for handheld devices.

That strategy may never be fully realized. Despite the best efforts of management, it could already be too late for the company to right itself. Sustained heavy losses have depleted cash reserves. Now, high levels of debt have investors worried that the company won't be able to hold on long enough to profit from mobile gains.

I would think the news here is that AMD is actually a Fortune 500 company, still, despite all it has been through in the past 6 yrs

Fortune 500 rank: 378

What does that say about the 121 lesser ranked "Fortune 500" companies?

Or the thousands of companies who aren't even good enough to make it into the "Fortune 500"

Doesn't really mean much, as it's only indicative of their gross revenue and nothing else.

Yay, my company didn't make this list ;)

edit: Oh wait, we're up for the year to date. It would be hard to make the list in that state.

Correct. Fortune 500 is revenue only. You can be hemorrhaging cash, but as long as you have one of the top 500 revenues in the US, you are Fortune 500.

Amd $ 1.86

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://ycharts.com/companies/AMD/cha...Date=&endDate=

... when the price goes below $5 , many widows & orphans , retirement
funds are NOT allowed to own these stocks .

stocks below $2 can't be traded on margin ( I think )

new stock options cannot be issued/traded

stocks bellow $1 can be DELISTED

lines of credit from financial institutions have clauses for acceleration
when " financial ratios " are breached .

... after venture-capital comes vulture-capital ...

Speculating on stocks is not a hot deal

Yes its very telling, since a larger and larger part of the stock is shorted and its getting more and more volatile. Big boys just gonna take the small boys money. The shorted amount is (way) over 20% today. In june it was 11.7%. In late august it was 18.4%.
