With esentially a 50:50 chance that's not a big accomplishment.

THen again....you practically HAVE to know how to build a pc to have an AMD chip in there......taking into account that most 'ordinary' people buy dells and gateways....from whom AMD chips are not available

Just goes to show you how opposite AT'ers are to the real world. In the real world Intel outsells AMD 4 to 1 and Dial up users outnumber Broadband users 3 to1 but in AT
Cable: 8653
xDSL: 4628
ISDN: 280
Dial Up: 3267

almost complete opposite.

1) You can get a AMD box (prebuilt) from any Local computer store.
2) Purchasing pieces and assembling a computer is not rocket science or brain surgery (or as one of our mgr puts it "Rocket Surgery").
3) People would buy dell/gateway/etc boxes fall into a few simple categories:
a) People who mess up every piece of electronics they touch and NEED the PAY for tech support.
b) People who have more money then brains and buy based on name.
c) People who purchase through work using employee purchase plans.

I thinks Intel to AMD is about 50/50, The extra is probably b/c you can almost build 2 AMD systems for the price of 1 Intel system. I'm a 2 AMD/1 Intel person, so I almost fit the AT ratio perfectly :)

Which is about 90% of consumers buying a PC. That same 90% could really care less if the 9700pro or the GF FX is faster, or which will be faster in 6months or a year, because they're completely content with their GF4 MX's and the Radeon 7500's.

Get it?

I think thats changing fast. DELL has offered some damn good deals recently on P4 systems..... The only reason I didnt jump on a recent one is I missed out on a couple of the rebates...

And the 300 or so out of 3000 total BB customers on Black Friday that felt the need to get in line 3 hours in advance.......

I heard the best analogy the other day on HFS, a well-known alternative music station here in DC (btw, is there such a thing as alternative music anymore???). Anyways, they were giving away advanced screening tix to LoTR: TTT. Needless to say, the switchboard was getting flooded by calls. So the DJ jokingly says, "OK you geeks, we're not taking any more calls for the tix". So then 20 minutes later, he starts apologizing b/c he got like 400 angry calls from "geeks". His explanation was so right on though. He basically says that he wants to see LoTR as bad as the next guy, but the few fanatics that feel the need to get in line a week in advance and dress up as, Worf, Spock, Chewbacca, Storm Troopers, Frodo, etc. etc. make anyone else interested in the movie a "Geek" by association. It was too funny......too true.....

Chiz <----- Geek by association ;)

Ummm actually I don't see what your comments on video cards have to do with my comments on prebuilt boxes.

I mess up most pieces of electronics I touch, made Win 2K slow to a crawl, messed up 50 gigs of my 55 gig hard drive, my new JB WD drive gets a lower speed score in PC Mark 2002 than my WD BB used to, etc etc.
