"AMD is overclocked."

Him: Dude, you have AMD I wouldn't admit to that.

Me: Why, what's wrong with AMD processors?

Him: AMD is overclocked.

Me: What do you mean by that?

Him: Trust me, I have a BS in computer science from UCSD and a Master's from UCLA. I know all about processors.

Me: I find that hard to believe. Most of the reports I have read show AMD's current processors outdoing Intel's for the majority of applications they are used for. You still haven't explained what you mean by "AMD is overclocked." I've heard that argument before, but usually just from junior high geeks that think hyperthreading is going to make their internet better when they use it with AOL 9.0.

So what exactly is this "AMD is overclocked" argument supposed to mean anyway? I've heard it used before, but only by the parties mentioned in the above log (paraphrased and shortened to remove the insults that comprised most of it). Never have I heard it used by someone that supposedly had the aforementioned degrees.

He never would explain it to me. He kept up his insults, started questioning what my qualifications were, then logged off. :p

The whole "AMD is overclocked" argument is that essientially AMD makes slower CPUs, then overclocks them prints a new model number on them and sells them for higher prices. Basically they're just using the same chip for a lot of their CPUs just throttling the speed on it to charge you more/less.

That was my impression as well. :p I told him to find a non-fanboy major hardware site like AnandTech or ArsTechnica that would back him up. Someone else was thoughtful enough to remind us all that Intel.Com didn't count. ;)

...oh right, because EVERY intel chip is different....

Both companies do this.

Yeah, I thought everyone knew this. If a PC manufacturer calls up Intel and says, hey we need 5000 2.7ghz cpu's, Intel gives them what they want.....if their current batch will run just fine at 3.0, oh well...they get locked at 2.7 and shipped.

Yes, but both companies do it the other way around. They take the chips that don't qualify at the higher speeds and carve them down to lower spec - or carve down full-performance lines to get the marketshare. It's all about getting the maximum yield from production.

Edit - Beaten by PacFan. :p

Oh, and your friend's a moron Steve. Give me an IM name so I can mock him personally, please. ;)

He was no friend of mine, my friends are smarter than that. ;) Just some moron I was conversing with while we were both dead in CS: Source. I wish I had an IM name for him, but having a CS degree he probably doesn't know anything about software and how to use it since the focus of his study was processors. :p

a factory clock rating on a processor by definition cannot be overclocked

Did you at least beat him on the scoreboard? :p

a typical intel fanboi reaction when he slowly discovers the truth of himself having been gipped.

Yes. I think that may have been one of the reasons he left, especially considering I was averaging 200 ping to his 30-50. :p Ping is not normally like that, but there was a download finishing up.

EDIT: Actually, I may have been just about to pass him when he quit. I cannot recall for certain now if I was already ahead or just about to pull ahead when he quit.

Oh, he has BS degree alright....

Chances are he's a 13-yo kid who fried his dad's computer, and now thinks he knows everything and anything about "overclocking", but really, is only good at changing the desktop wallpaper for his parents..

No, he really could have a degree in CS. I've met a couple of people with a BS in CS who did not know the difference between PCI and ISA, and did not know which was more frequently used.

until you can show me a practical difference in minutes, I'm not going to worry about who's faster in seconds.

But we all know that the Intel processor will finish an infinity loop before the AMD.
