AMD is making a new type of chips?

Yesterday I bought a Compaq R3306 laptop. It's advertised to have a Athlon XP-M 3000+ 1.6GHz processor. At first I thought this was a typo because I also have a XP-M 2400+ that is a Barton core and runs at 1.8GHz. So I start up CPU-Z on my new compaq and it says the processor is a socket 754 Athlon 64 running at 1.6GHz with 256K L2 cache. I'm really confused. I didn't know AMD made these chips.

It's confusing though because on the box it says XP-M. It even has a sticker on it that says Athlon XP-M. CPU-Z says it's a Clawhammer Athlon 64 though. I wonder if it will run 64bit code...

They were making K8 based Athlon XP-Ms for HP a few months back. They're basically Athlon 64s but 32-bit only and with no NX bit.

I thought Clawhammers came with 512K (Clawhammer 3000+, which you don't see anymore) or 1MB of cache. I think I read something like this a while ago, if only I knew what to feed the search button so it would spit it out to me.

Edit: Oh. That makes them basically S754 Semprons (a la the 3100+).

They should call them semprons if thats what they are. I thought I was buying an Athlon XP-M. Oh well, I think that a Sempron is prolly faster than a barton core anyways.

The cpu you have will beat the crap out of a original 3000+ XP-M in most things. I would be happy you got that cpu instead of the normal XP-M. 🙂

Pretty sure it's a Socket 754 Sempron. Though it's not a 64bit cpu, CPU-Z probably hasn't been updated to properly identify Semprons yet, so it sees Socket754 and assumes the CPU is a 64bit processor.

They do make those chips, I bet it has 512k with half disabled, AMD has their own CPU ID tool get and see what it says.
should be called a sempron 2800+ if your lucky maybe someone will figure out hardware mods to enable cache, change multipliers or 64bit down the road.
