AMD is definately taking over!

Just what the title says. I have been shopping around because I will be odering parts for my new computer next weak sometime and I just can't believe the prices for AMD. I'm definatley going w/them.

AMD is in an interesting position right now, since they definitely have higher speed chips and limited production capability, it might be a good idea right now for AMD to reposition their chips as high end only, by either limiting or dropping the duron.

Dropping the duron is a bad idea.
1. They can't make tbirds that run faster than Ghz at that fab.( not with aluminum interconnects at least)
2. the celeron needs some competition.
3. they want to grab market share and name recognition.

Well they actually are going to drop the Duron, by spring 2001, but if you thought the Duron was a nice chip now wait to the Spring when it's replaced by the Morgan with the Mustang core!!
It will also (according to roadmaps and rumours) be launched with 128KB L2! (not bad for the "Value Line:&quot😉 😀

the only bad thing about the duron is it's name. the durons isn't a reputable name among normal consumers. When the duron becomes as common of a name than celeron than i would suspect that AMD would start to have a chance to take over. this is true about the athlon. it'll be years 'till normal consumers choose the name "athlon" vs "pentium" we've heard the name pentium for the last 8 years or so. I believe AMD has a good chance to take over but it's going to be a while until anyone is sure of it. us computer guru's know what's for sure now: AMD does rule!!

AMD have seen a chance to bully intel while they got problems with supply and the initially disappointing P4. AMD will be in a lot of new systems this christmas, especially the kiddie gamers.
I thought it ironic that the Celeron has better brand recognition or reputable name... if only they'd think what that means: if it is so, it's because Celerons have been around FOR OVER 2 YEARS! In other words in this fast moving biz it oughta be ought of date, and it is actually- Intel have insisted on this being so. Their emasculated 600 will at 900 only benchmark like the Athlon600 I have. KISS-MY-ASS Intel!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, Intel has had a myriad of problems lately, but I wouldn't count them out just yet. AMD still has a ways to go, so for now Intel is still on top.

AMD needs to preserve the name Duron in their new product this spring to help with name recognition.

as for the topic of this thread... i just can't take any hardware advice/info/opinions that come from paulson or hubbs seriously. just look at the other 98% of what they write on these forums...

listen to CRV and some of the other elite members, most of them really know their shiit.

Market share is still ~ 80/20 in favor of Intel. And if AMD is truly "sold out" of chips through the end of the year like they say, how do you propose they are going to take over?

They certainly have some nice chips, but their major roadblock is that they have about 1/4 (or less) the capacity that Intel has. As such, it is impossible for them to "take over".

Sometimes it's better to have more ammunition (Intel) vs. having a bigger gun (AMD) ...

One of the things I noticed upon reading the market analysts opinions of Intel is that "they have excess inventory on hand". Nice way of saying "They ain't selling as many as they produce".
From what I've read, AMD 1ghz (and above!) are selling at least a ratio of 10-1 of Intels. Figuring about equal cost to produce each unit (around $50), AMD is coming up with at least $2000 to Intels $500. Now add to this fact that Intel has these setting on the shelf (losing money- I'd estimate it to be $5 a day by the time you factor in future price cuts, etc)
It appears that the Tbirds and Durons are binning much higher, letting AMD increase the clock speed at will, and still have "head room" for further development of the Athlon. Intel is at a dead end for the PIII (at least for the time being, and I'd hate to bet on whether or not it'll go to .13- unless it's as the Celeron 3/100 fsb!)
P4 may be able to turn it around for Intel, however, preliminary indications aren't that good. However, I remember reading the same about the Athlon. One possible worrisome thing to consider- the P4 is (as far as I know) only produced in Intels Isreal fab. Now, consider that the fab is about 10 miles from the Isreali-Palestinian border, and that there have been problems in that area- Intel has a lot to be worried about
