On another site I frequent, several of the members do ad hoc polling of their local retail shops (Sam's Club, Best Buy, etc...) to see what they carry in stock each month.
If you guys could post what you find and even better break it down into numbers of laptops and desktops I would appreciate the data...
It doesn't prove anything in any direction, but it's interesting from a market perspective.

Cheers!

Edit: I'll post what's been posted there for the last week or so...
These are trips to individual stores:
Sam's Club
Desktops - 7 AMD, 1 Intel
Laptops - 7 AMD, 1 Intel

Costco
Desktops - 1 AMD, 6 Intel
Laptops - 2 AMD, 6 Intel

If I go to Best Buy, both AMD and Intel are offered. I see a lot of AMD laptops offered. Mostly HP's. But at the same time, I see a lot more offered with Intel. Like by a landslide. I just went online to see the ratio of Intel to AMD laptops being offered. The numbers are 67 Intel laptops to 17 AMD laptops. So we are looking at just under 4:1 Intel:AMD.

Desktop ratio is a lot closer at 38:29 (1.3:1 Intel:AMD).

I rarely go into Circuit City or CompUSA anymore. So Best Buy is my only point of reference.

Just curious, Viditor, why are you guys discussing this over at Motley Fool's AMD stocks forum? I mean, do many people buy computers at a brick and mortar place these days? I'd think online sales (HP, Dell) would be more important.

A fair question...
Firstly, yes...a huge number of people buy computers at brick and mortar (especially the discounters like Costco and Sams). The question is who buys there and what kind of equipment are we talking about.
The people who buy there are mom and pop, and for a few reasons...first, they don't really know what "on-line" means, and secondly, even of those who do, many have zero trust in on-line ordering. There's also the question of returning the system or getting it fixed...brick and mortar is much simpler to deal with for them.
I believe (and this may have changed in the last 2 years) that the majority of retail systems are still bought at brick and mortar shops.

As to what kind of systems, for the large discounters it tends to be overflow systems that have been heavily discounted to clear inventory.
That is the main reason I am interested anyway...while it's anecdotal data and not hard data, it still helps me guess at how much old inventory is moving (though I daresay that a Ouiji board is almost as good here).

I don't visit my local Best Buy much these day -- last time I went there to browse over the video cards, I was sorely disappointed (FX 5200s and other slim pickings). But these were what was being offered in the weekly ad:

2 Gateways with Q6600 (I can't believe they want $1300+ for a system that has a 8500 GT...ridiculous) - $1329.97, $1099.97

1 HP X2 5000+ $679.97
1 Acer X2 4400+ $599.97
1 eMachines Sempron 3800+ $379.97

It looks like the AMD systems they have are the mainstream variety. The Intel systems are what they're passing off as high end...*pokes the 8500 GT with a six foot pole *.

Retail is 9% of the U.S. computer market.

Thanks guys...
To be clear though, I'm looking for brick and mortar retail numbers, not on-line retail.

Again, thanks for the responses!
