AMD: I want my MTV PC

<< The MTV-branded PCs will use processors from Advanced Micro Devices and be built by LAN Plus, the companies announced Wednesday.

The first MTV PC, expected to be available in the spring, will feature AMD's Athlon XP processor, a flat-panel display, DVD and CD-rewritable drives, and cable TV and radio tuners. It will cost about $1,800, roughly the same as a high-end AMD-based PC from a manufacturer such as Compaq Computer.

Lol, there was another thread on this same topic somewhere else. But still, I'll put in a lol.

I think this PC could do ok, who knows really. Since Viacom is a giant of giants, I'm sure they don't have a marketing issue. What's really interesting is that if they market this MTV PC, AMD's Athlon is going to get a hell of a lot of free exposure. That should be interesting.

I'm just not sure about how I feel about this. I'm glad about all the exposure AMD's going to get with this -- and you must admit that MTV is a more cutting-edge marketting ethos than either those d@mn blue-men or the silly-@ss aliens. But the point has been made convincingly that MTV is an endless font of derivative, posturing garbage. If the "television revolution" meant selling a cancerous style-culture that's all sound-and-fury-meaning-bupkiss (like 80s junk-bonds and the recent rage for AOL stocks), then I'm not sure whether I care for AMD -- a genuinely substantial technology producer (Amen!) -- to become intimately associated with bunch of goateed spin-mavens running around LA in Prada shoes with sales figures for 'Nsync on their lappies.

'Kinda makes me wish SST had become a multi-billion media empire and they dragged Husker Du out of retirement to do the ads. sigh

MTV is trash. But if they want to buy AMD processors and sell computers, they have the right to do so. I give MTV 6 months before their PC venture collapses.

How many consumers would pick up an MTV PC over an HP or Dell? MTV does't exactly imply quality or good service to me. It sounds like a silly cheap toy for thrills (even if it really isn't).

also look at the demographic. how many people who really sit and watch mtv have $1800 to spend on a pc?

Tristramshandy please come down off your high horse, MTV can only help AMD by giving them exposure to millions of potential customers. I know the average MTV veiwer isn't a Meat Puppets fan but they have something AMD needs and ain't getting enough of from the buyer of genuinely substantial technology and thats money.

LOL. 😀

Why do I suspect the comments would be different if they featured Intel processors? 🙂

Who really gives a rats' ass what name is on the PC? I mean, really. I don't think it will substantially help AMD, but, certainly, it will be a marketing success. The demographic most targeted by MTV is the generation most in to technology. It's a perfect blend 🙂

Uh, AMD already has substantial presence in the consumer market. AMD needs OEMs to convince businesses that AMD platforms are viable (without VIA chipsets of course). MTV is not going to help this...

Ok, Diable, how 'bout them 'Puppets doing their blistering cover of "Good Golly Miss Molly" from Up the Sun for an advert?

I'dunno. Some ZZ Top from Tres Hombres might go just as well. Anyhoo, I agree this means mucho money and exposure for AMD, and, no doubt, that tiny sector of spoiled sixteen-year-olds who buy the rigs will be building their own inside of twelve months (especially after being laughed-at for paying the $1800. overhead by smard fellers like the ones on this board).
