AMD hurts my head

Can someone please explain AMD's family of processors to me. I have been "Out of the loop" so I don't know all of the particulars. I have been told that the "Sempron" is a replacement for the "Athlon XP", but I thought the "Sempron" was a "Duron" replacement???

I should clarify, my vendor told me the Sempron was the equivalent to, and replacement for the Athlon XP. I questioned that.

The semrpon is AMD's new budget line..and yes they were like the durons that came out a while ago but failed...get a sempron over a duron

Okay, so what about the Athlon XP, is it being replaced? I need a chart or something here.

Okay, it's actually not that bad.

Across the perfomrance Range:

Server: Opteron
High end desktop: Athlon64 FX
Mid range desktop: Athlon64
Low end desktop: Sempron
Mobile: Turion (just now replaceing the mobile Athlon64)

The thing that is confusing you is this:

When the Sempron was first released it was really two disctinct processors with one name. The first, was basically a stripped down AthlonXP. This low end Sempron ran on regular socket A and the differences were minimal. AFIAK, this was to clear stocks of the XP.

SIMULTANEOUSLY, AMD released the 'higher end sempron' which was an athlon 64 stripped of it's 64-bitness. This chip ran on socket754 and is completely different from the socket A Sempron.

It seems that the socket A Sempron is gone now though, as the last socket A chips have been manufactured and what you see in the retail chain today represents old stock. So you don't really need to know all that. 😛

To add: The OLD (pre A-64) line looked like this:
Athlon XP
Duron
Mobile Athlon XP

The Athlon XP has been phased out, becauser the new high end is the Athlon 64 line.
The Sempron is the budget line, like the Duron was, HOWEVER there were socket A Semprons made which were basically renamed Athlon XP's.
Socket 754 Semprons are basically cut cache Athlon 64's without the 64 (currently).
Original:
High end -> Athlon XP
Low end -> Duron
Transition:
High end -> Athlon 64
Mid Range -> Athlon XP
Low end -> Duron
Now:
High end -> Athlon 64
Mid range -> Socket 754 Semprons
Low end -> Socket A XP/Semprons (same chip, new name)
Future:
High end -> Athlon 64
Low end -> Semprons
