I just put together my sytem a couple of months ago and have a question regarding heatsink/fan. The specs of my system are

AMD Athalon XP 2100+ processor
Giga-Byte GA-7DXR+ (AMD? 761 AGPset)
512 PC2100 DDRAM (Mushkin 1 module)
60 GB IBM HD and 30 GB Maxtor HD

My system is always very loud and when it first starts it makes an aweful noise for about 5 mintues then it goes away, but still continues to be very loud. I am currnetly using a Coolermaster heatsink/fan which shipped with my processor. I am wondering if buying a new fan would help my sytem performance, at times i think my system is getting too hot but I do not know how to be sure. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I do not know anything about heatsink and fans so please let me know about an exact modle and if anyone else has had these problems. Thank you very much for your help.

Make sure all your parts are screwed in tightly. It might not be the fans, but your case rattling. If it is indeed your fans, then you have parts that need to be returned or warranteed, as they obviously are not doing their job.

How old is your power supply unit? What you described might be a failing power-supply fan.
