I just put together my sytem a couple of months ago and have a question regarding heatsink/fan. The specs of my system are

AMD Athalon XP 2100+ processor
Giga-Byte GA-7DXR+ (AMD? 761 AGPset)
512 PC2100 DDRAM (Mushkin 1 module)
60 GB IBM HD and 30 GB Maxtor HD

My system is always very loud and when it first starts it makes an aweful noise for about 5 mintues then it goes away, but still continues to be very loud. I am currnetly using a Coolermaster heatsink/fan which shipped with my processor. I am wondering if buying a new fan would help my sytem performance, at times i think my system is getting too hot but I do not know how to be sure. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I do not know anything about heatsink and fans so please let me know about an exact modle and if anyone else has had these problems. Thank you very much for your help.

open up your case before you boot up, find out which fan is making the noise. if its coming from your coolermaster, maybe its time to give it the boot.

to find out your current CPU temps you should go into your BIOS... there should be a sub menu labeled "Hardware Monitoring" or something to that effect. Gigabyte should also have a utility that you can monitor temps right from windows. I personally wouldn't even consider using a Cooler Master fan with a XP 2100+... you need a quality 80mm fan and heatsink preferrably made out of copper to keep that thing cool. It would be nice if you could keep the cpu under 50C, and definitally under 60C. (the thermal limit is 90C). It's difficult to find an adequate cooler that's also quiet, don't even look at anything that uses a 60mm fan. Your computer should not sound like a blow drier or for that matter feel hot like one either.

First, open case and find out which fan is making the noise. While you have the case open, at least replace the little fan that came with retail CPU with something bigger. AMD states that processor will operate up to 90C. Anything over 50C is too much for me!!! I used the HS that came with a XP1600+ with a Delta fan that was slowed down to 6000 RPM and got very good results. 40C idle and 44C under load with bearable noise levels.

But the XP2100+ requires much more as it is a big big heat generator. I now have a XP2000+ FSB upped to XP2100 speeds. Was forced to add PAL 8045 HS and built an adapter to use 92mm Panaflo 12H fan. A lot of trouble to do this, but noise is low (a rumble not a screaming jet) fan is rated @ 35dbs. Temps are 40C idle and 44C under load. You also can get good results with a PAL 8045 HS with a YSTech fan with rheostat. Adjust fan speed to your level of sound and cooling.

At least, get a copper based HS with a 80mm fan; anything less is a waste of time and money.
