so in Just Cause 2, an overclocked 6850 only does exactly 20% better than my old overclocked 192sp gtx260? that sure isn't much progress in over 2 years for a new card that costs more than what I paid back then for mine.

The "wall" has been hit. AMD knows this. nV knows this. If the H2 28nm releases next year don't wow us like the G92-GT200b, and the 3870-4890 did....I fear that high-end discreet graphics are in trouble.

On the bright side, if you are willing to go with a multi-GPU solution, there are extremely killer deals right now. 2X 1GB 260s, 2X 5850s.......you really can't go wrong.

Higher settings, different test system, better results. I don't think you can necessarily draw a conclusion about GPU power when comparing different test systems, yours and his. He is most likely using a different motherboard and RAM configuration than you did.

its probably just the 2560 res in one bench and then the 8xAA as most newer ATI cards can handle those better. and I doubt ram or mobo will make any noticeable difference. I get the exact same fps in the Dark Tower benchmark that Techreport got with their gtx260 so even a high end mobo/ram and i7 cpu is of no value in Just Cause 2 with mid range cards.

To the OP:
nice card, now try pushing it to its limits. I've had my Sapphire 6850 at 940/1180 stock voltages, I'm pretty sure yours can even pass it. Putting a bit of voltage won't hurt too. Hit the 1ghz mark core with a little added volts.

What... your arguments don't make any logically conclusive sense.

As far as Just Cause 2 is concerned, here we have a reviewer testing at more demanding settings and matching your setup, and of course only a few percentage behind the OP's setup with the same video card. Put your GTX 260 at those settings and I'm sure you'll see more than a 20% difference.

Just because you get the same framerate in some arbitrary game as TR doesn't really mean that much. Different games behave differently, plus there is always the inherit differences in driver versions and Nvidia Control Panel/Catalyst Control center settings.

It's also possible the OP has settings forced in CCC: Adaptive AA, perhaps higher quality AA, perhaps a different AA mode other than MSAA. If so then you're not doing an apples to apples comparison anymore. And that's really my point. You seem to be using a Jump-to-Conclusions mat.

i hope ravenseal doesnt mind me posting on his thread but, i just got the same card and these are my results:

idle temp 40 C
load temp 56c

crysis GPU_ benchmark done at 1920x1080 resolution, no aa, all settings high.

4850 - averaged 33fps
6850 - averaged 61 fps

both averaged fps numbers were taken at almost the same frame rate so they are pretty accurate in the benchmark when they were looped 1 time

3dmark 11 coming when i get back from dinner

While i do agree happy is 460 happy lately :) if i was considering a new GPU purchase i would want to know that a GTX 460 that can be had for a little as $90-120 after rebate was close to the speed of a $170 AMD GPU. You can say what you want about the 460 but it is the price performance leader right now as long as these rebates keep up.

Agree with Nemesis 1 that you would have to be living on a island not to know about the 460 if you post on these forums but not everyone does.

To the OP im happy you are happy with your purchase. The 6850's are very nice cards that perform well with low power draw. If i could have waited i would have went with a 6xxx series but at the time my 4890 kicked the bucket the 460 was the best option for what i had to spend.

Hmmm? Happy gets a forced vacation for posting it here in the first place and you think it should be bumped back up and discussed in the thread anyway? Doesn't seem like the best move, IMO.

Perhaps not, i was simply saying as a consumer i would want to be aware of all my options if i was considering a purchase.

Weren't retail prices of the GTX260 in the $250-300 range two years ago? (after falling from the $400 launch price). His card is less than $200.

I paid $184 bucks after rebate in October 2008. and I was mistakenly thinking of the 6870 price when I said that.
