AMD gave me the worst HSF.

Got my AMD64 3000+ in a retail package. The HSF they include is a piece of junk!

It all alluminum, no copper whatsoever, and the worst part is, the underside is all scratched!! filling that up with AS didn't help much.

I can only safely OC to 2.2Ghz ..... and my idle temp is like 43C

what's the worst piece of junk HSF you recieved as a package?

you should be considered lucky to get an overclock on the stock HSF. For good reason, as they are rated for what they are designed to run at. No stock HSF is made of copper.

Exactly...a stock copper heatsink? What were you expecting, an SLK-948U?
Ambient temps play a huge role in your CPU temps, so don't be so quick to drop all the blame on the HSF. If you've got bad ventilation in your case, that will raise the CPU temp quite a bit.

If the stock HSF was scratched, you might want to ask for a replacement. That is, after you wipe off all the AS5.

Duh. Duvie is running 2.6-2.7 ghz with the stock hsf all-aluminum and idle temps at high 30's full load high 50's. You have some other problems. What is the ambient temp ? What motherboard do you have ? (my abit is way over reporting temps)

2.6-2.7Ghz? on 130nm chip? NICE

system: 40c I do have 4 PATA HD + 2 DVD-RW lol..that's a lot of cables to go around.

Although prim95 never gets above 54c.

Duct an A/C vent into your computer and you'll be good to go :D

dont complain, the stock heatsink does a decent job cooling a STOCK CPU and was not meant for overclocking. seriously, what were you expecting?

ok..better news.....took the heatsink off, whipped the bottom (full of AS) and put it back up and I am at 2.3Ghz with idle 40c prim95 54c
can do 2.4Ghz but require 1.65V, vs 1.52 for 2.3Ghz. so I just put it on 2.3Ghz.

I guess it was just a tad little too much AS.

AMD's SHSF is one of the best. How else are people getting 900Mhz overclcoks like duvie.. I got 500 Mhz in preliminary testing before slapping my water block on.

I see a lot of A64 chips idling around 40-45 C. What's impressive though is that under load, they barely break 50 C. So I don't think you are experiencing anything abnormal. And for all those people that say, "oh look, somethings wrong! Duvie got +800MHz!" Seriously, get real. Not all cpus are created equal. A scratched sink scares me though, but if you are planning to overclock, you'd want a new heatsink anyway.

I'm running a 3500+ at 2.530GHz with stock HSF and Prime95 stable. Temps are 40C @ idle, 52C @ load when running Prime95.

I've only taken the chip up to 2.6 so far with no change in temps. I couldn't run Prime95 for more than 20 Minutes at 2.6, though.

Like mine looks scratched, or irregular criss crossing scratches that look like it is used?

Ya, what exactly does "scratchd" mean? Most Heatsinks are brushed and not polished smooth.

I personally think the stock hsf for A64 processors are pretty good considering it's stock.

My computer idles at 30-32C with stock hsf, no OC and under load (gaming), it might reach 38C tops. Never bothered to OC since it has been good for me so far. Also, i think my stock hsf was a copper base with aluminum fins as someone else showed earlier. I could unhook it to check but that would be too much effort :p

Anyway, if you were looking for a hsf to OC with, you're going to have to spend 30-40 bucks on one. It's called 'stock' for a reason.

Did you see my reply ? How anout 2.6-2.7 ghz on a 90nm stock all-aluminum HSF. See Duvie for proof. I loaned it to him.....

Well, I'm at 2.4 ghz on stock cooling/default voltage off a 754 AMD64 3000+. I'm going to get a better hsf as soon as I decide between an SP90 or the Zalman 7700 but that's more or less because my system is built with a bit of silence in mind.

Newer Athlon XP retail HSF assemblies had at least copper inserts on the bottom. I wouldn't expect them to ship all-copper heatsinks stock, no.

Edit: Apparently DAPUNISHER got a stock heatsink with all all-copper base and "thin fin" Al fins with his. Even better!

My ancient retail Athlon XP1800+ had an all-Al cooler, that looked like a cheapo generic Socket370-cooler. The heatsink actually worked just fine, even with generic white paste, but the stock 2800-RPM fan had to go, the heatsink was getting too hot to touch. I swapped with a 5000-RPM fan from an old heavy-duty monster Slot-1 cooler, and I was good to go. The newer Athlon heatsink assemblies with the copper insert, also have a fan that looks like an AVC "sunflower" on them. Together, they seem much better than the el-cheapo I ended up with.
