AMD fx 8350?

I have an FX and like it very much. It is a good all around CPU, a good performer (especially if you overclock), but there may be better choices depending on what you want to use it for.
 
Depends. If you have a AM3+ motherboard I think it is worth it as a solid upgrade. I had a FX-8350 about a year and I didn't have any problems in games (1080p, 60hz).

However, the AM3+ plattform is old, and the FX needs to be overclocked to keep up with the alternatives. And it runs hot and it's not the most efficient CPU (the FX-8370 and the -e derivates are much more power efficient).

But if you already have a motherboard, I thinks its a good upgrade for the money.
 
Power consumption isn't bad, for many things (like gaming, surfing, multimedia use, etc.) most cores are sitting idle. With power saving features enabled I am able to sip power. Quality motherboards with modern features can be found. Single / lightly threaded performance lags behind Intel, but I think it's made into more of an issue on internet forums than it is a problem in real life.

With all that being said, it's hard to recommend a ground-up FX build in most cases today.
 
FX chips are usually overlooked but they offer tremendous value as a general purpose processor if you get them on sale.

For example this BF I was able to snag both an FX-8350 and that same MSI Gaming 970 motherboard for $220 CAD which is like $165 USD. It even came with Dirt Rally which I'll sell off for at another $20-30.

If you can snag a chip and mobo around these prices or a little more you can spend a lot more towards a better video card or bigger SSD which give a better return on investment.

Just take a look at what one of these chips at stock can do paired with a decent video card.

The saying "There's not really bad products, just bad pricing". This absolutely applies to FX chips.

The FX-8350 is overpriced for what you get. There are better chips, such as the FX-8320e, provided you know how to set your own voltages and clockspeeds (or are willing to learn).

If/when AMD starts selling some 8350s taken from the "new" Vishera wafers, we may see a return of the 8350 to relevance, but I haven't seen anyone report getting an 8350 that was from newer product runs. There are some FX-6350s out there that are post-wk 29 2014. Dunno about 6300s.
 
You really have to specify what you want to use it for. It is good for certain productivity apps and some games that utilize all or most of the cores. It lags behind in anything requiring fast single or lightly threaded performance, including a lot of games. Modern Intel quads are much more well balanced, offering good performance in both scenarios, but are more expensive. And it does use more power as well. Personally, I value efficiency and well-rounded performance, and dont use any of the productivity apps it is best at, so I would go intel.

The 8350 I just got has a September 2015 manufacturing date.

I am in the same boat right now, I need a upgrade to hold me over till zen. I am currently using a AMD 5350 but need a little more Umph for video encoding with handbrake. I am thinking Fx-8350 Or i3 6300. No gaming really just Movies and Music use.Which would be stronger and fast at Handbrake?
 
I've been using an 8350 for a couple of years now and have had no problems at all regardless of what all the intel fanboys say. It's a solid chip.
 
I'd imagine it depends on what you want to use it for. I bought one to handle running my file server and transcoding in Plex. The closest thing I could have picked up for the same price on the Intel side would have been a i3-4170, or look used. For that it was a bit of a no brainer.
 
I love my Xeon E3-1231 v3 CPU but it loses big time in price/performance against these heavily multi-threaded apps even when on sale.

What LTC8K6 said is true. If you can score a 95W 8300/8310 for around $100.00 grab one. They hit around 4.3 - 4.5Ghz overclocked.

Anyone know where to get a Fx-8350 or Fx-8320e for cheap cheap right now? Would very much like to snag one up today if possible to hold me over till zen pops up next year. I already checked the usual spots like tiger and newegg but they are going for $150-$170. 🙁

Well, the 1231 V3 at 3.8Ghz, easily done on any 1150 board that allows overclocking, should easily stay in front of an FX-8350.

You have to decide on your own regarding the value of each. 🙂
