AMD FX-60 vs X2 4800+ toledo

4800 is rated at 2.4ghz 2 x 1mb cache
fx-60 is rated at 2.6ghz 2 x 1mb cache

wont be overclocking and air cooled by scythe ninja w/ nexus.
which would be better in most real world applications like encoding/decoding, dvd ripping, games, future games and applications.

also want a quick boot and shut down time...
which would better suit those needs better?

if you got the money, the fx60 no doubt will be faster since both dual-core

but the $400 difference for 200mhz, i'd say NO. You can use these 400 dollars to get a high end video card (if you game) or spend it on extra ram (if you do some rendering/grahics stuff). The 400 can be spend on other components to maximize your "bang-for-the-buck".

What is it like a $400 difference? I don't think you'd miss the 200mhz if you went for the 4800+. BUT, I would seriously consider the Opteron 175 for $499. 2.2ghzx 2x1mb cache. So easily overclocked to a much higher clockspeed.

Why no overclocking, even just a little bit? Like to take the 4800+ to FX60 speeds, or to take the Opteron 175 to 4800+ speeds (or higher?)

not to be rude but kinda given isn't it 😛

just not worth the performance boost imo

Stop trolling, please. This is REALLY what I would do and, unlike your post, it's a valid piece of advice 😀 Unless of course money is no object - in this case, getting the FX-60 is a no-brainer.

If you are looking to drop that kind of cash why not wait until the AM2 socket comes out. The FX60 is the last chip on this socket. Hate to see you drop a grand plus on a CPU on a platform with no upgrade path.

Tha point alone would make me buy the 400 option the guys are talking about and OC.

my .02 cents

HAHA, hell yea!

If your loaded get the FX-60 and brag and boast to all your rich buddies about how much we spent. The rest of us (poor pieces of crap) will boast about how much we saved buying an opteron 165/170 and overclocking to FX-60 speeds. 🙂

If this is for a business where time is money and you have to have the fastest, most reliable computer possible then get the FX60.

Otherwise the performance delta between that and the 4800+ isn't enough to worry about.

Good idea except for the fact that there never was a PIII266.

thanks for all the help i'm kind of leaning towards the 4800+. i dont want to overclock to void warranty. safety precautions. but i'd like to know if there were any significant differences in processors besides the 200mhz clock speed.

Minor differences:
Name
4800+ has a locked multiplier, FX 60 dosent
FX 60 is made with higher quality silicon (dosent affect performance, only overclocking ability, so technically it could affect performance if you look at it differently)

Apart from that theyre pretty much the same.

I wasn't sober enough to see if there ever was.

but since I would be drunk at the time of purchase (thanks to all the cash I had saved), it wouldn't matter to me.

Your choice, but there's not much point if you're sticking with the 19" screen.

I'd just stick with the 1900XT and gloat.
