I have a MSI K7T Pro 2-A with a Duron 800. I connected the bridges using the pencil trick and was successful at overclocking the processor to 850 (8.5x100) but if I want to go to 9 or above, though I can save the settings in the BIOS, the computer fails to reboot @ 900 and clocks it back to 800. Why is this? Did I not connect the L1 bridges very well? Should I erase the pencil job I did and try again....or is it safe to erase it? Anyone got any suggestions?? Thanks!!

May be the bridge job. I have seen a number of posts stateing that they had to do the pencil thing 2-3 times to get good current flow. May want to try a conductive pen or the rear window repair method, as they seem to be the most reliable.
This is an interesting piece on the subject.
L-1 bridge

My link bites, on the left side of the page under cpu review and tips.

Do you know if it is safe to erase the pencil job and redo it? I wonder if there is a "smudge factor"??????

When you do the pencil, try using a magnifying glass...did wonders for me! I could actually see what the heck I was doin. :)

>edit Go ahead and erase, just make sure it's all off edit<

Ok. I erased my old pencil job and redid it. I can get my 800 Duron to boot @ 950mHz (9.5x100). I tried x10 and it would not start up...so I had to erase it again boot it up (so it would recognize 800 again) then redo the pencil job...I have it currently running @ 950mHz. Thanks for your help guys...appreciate it. I guess if I wanted to hit the x10 mark, I would have to use conductive ink or something better than a HB pencil.

;)

scorch2000: Hang in there! At least you're headed in the right direction. Just keep erasing the lead and reapplying it until you get it right. (It took me 6 tries to successfully overclock my first Duron. That was a 600 than ran stable at 900MHz.)

Tip: Put a credit card between the bridges to avoid cross-linking them.

I currently have a Duron 700 that runs stable at 1083MHz so I'm not sure what Bigdude is talking about.

Bigdude likes his blunts.
Newer Duron 800's should push a gig without trouble.
Heck, even my WEEK 21 Duron 650 factory unlocked does 933 @ 1.85v.

The fact is that your problem IS the L1 bridges. You didn't connect them properly. Any Duron 800 can get to 8.5x without unlocking no problem, i think.(at least mine did). You'll have to go over the bridges again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again until the pencil trick works. Otherwise, just go get a rear-window defogger kit or a conductive pen. Much more reliable.

Scorch, try this. I was in a similar situation a week or so back, same mobo, different cpu.
Set the multipier in the bios to 10x and give it the max voltage while you are in there. Save the changes and exit, before the thing reboots turn off the power. Leave it off for a few hours, I left mine off while I went to work, when I turned it on after work it booted right up a 1000mhz. Haven't had a problem since. I have no idea why it would start a 10x after a real cold boot but it did.
hope it works for you

Just built a late week Duron 800 system, cranked up at 1000MHz 1.70v right away, if it wasn't going to someone else I would try to push harder but I want rock-solid stability. Ran Q2 demo for five hours straight while I was away :)

Put your CPU core voltage at 1.85, that should get you to 10x. I can only reach 10x multiplier when running 1.825, more stable at 1.85. Get the bios update from MSi's website which lets you choose these voltage settings without connecting the L7 bridges. Also make sure you have a hsf that is good enough to handle the heat. I run arount 41*C idle at 10x, 105fsb, 1.85voltage. This is with Alpha PAL6035, Arctic silver.

bigdude:most durons will do more than 850...mine is a week 39 or 40..something like that...and it does WAY past 850...ive had it register at 1050, and i havnt tried higher. thats also at 1.69v (1.74)...so like EVERYONE else has said..connective problem =)
