AMD Dual Core Optimizer

Yes, especially when you use it with the Microsoft dual core hotfix. It improves the efficiency of many applications on XP when using a X2 processor.

Hmm, this is the first I've heard of the Microsoft dual core hotfix, do I need it?

Okay, thanks.

I disagree. I installed the Dual-Core Optimizer on my AM2 4800+ and my computer had serious performance issues. It would lock up on a simple thing like trying to open up the Programs in Start menu. In addition, it broke my sound, I would get a DirectSoundCreate failure in foobar2000. I installed the Microsoft hotfix and it wasn't better. I had to restore my system, but then every random notification/popup window would make the system beep instead of playing the Windows sound. I had to reinstall my Audigy 2 drivers to get sound back. After several reboots I can confirm my computer is starting up slower and operating slower as well, still.

A google of "AMD optimizer" will show plenty of support problems on AMD's forums as well. Avoid it at all costs, it's most likely not worth the potential system breakdown.
