AMD Dual Core Optimizer

Well in a short time I am going to be building my 1st AMD system and I noticed on the AMD site they have this optimizer on the DL page, I was wondering if this is really needed or just a bunch of hype. I will be getting a 4600+ or something in that range.

I'm about to receive an X2 as well, is there an install guide or tips for dual core amd's around?

I didn't even install the driver or the optimizer or the hotfix. I have no problems at all. I use Win2k though.

I am not one to O/C my systems but I do like to make them run as well as they can thats why I asked about this optimizer. Most of the time when I see things like this I dont expect them to be anything special, I rely on building a good system around good hardware. I am guessing that a 4600+ running my X1900XT will prob work fine without using it I was just wondering if anyone had any numbers showing if it indeed does help.

HAHAHAHA, put in place :)

I installed the dual core optimizer and it did nothing for me :( Apparently theres supposed to be a new process and some other stuff, but i never seen it. Deux ex still acts screwey with dual core too. So no benefit to me, maybe itll work for you though.

There was a big thread about it, with a lot of people saying "yay" basically... but noone listed any benefits.

I installed the AMD cpu driver first, rebooted, then installed the dual core optimizer.

Hard to say because I installed my 3800+, then booted to the OS and immediately installed them.

The driver and optimizer (optimizer should replace the hotfix from microsoft that was used before, installed manually) should help fix issues in games where the game would speed up really fast. Might fix issues in some programs too (not sure about this though). Recommended to install. Install amd driver, reboot, then install optimizer.

I didn't need the driver or the optimizer, but they eliminate any quirks if you experience them. For instance, my foobar was messed up, it would play back music files in an erratic fashion before the driver, and the optimizer helped to reduce side effects caused by programs that simply don't like to play nice with dual core (or even HT) - to which the only complete solution is designate a single core to those specific apps.

I am currently not using it because it didn't play well with my system. I found out that it was causing my system to hang on startup, as things were loading on the desktop. Through the process of elemination, a few images of my system, and the spare time only some college students are afforded, I found out that it was, in fact, because I had MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 Ent. Ed. installed on my system before installing the AMD Dual Core Optimizer driver. I tried it with an image that I uninstalled MS Virtual Server on and then installed the AMD driver and had no problem. I then tried it again with installing the driver after already having MS Virtual Server 2005 on it and it hung on startup again. Something about those two didn't mix.

Just in case anyone else runs into something similar.

I never noticed any difference with it (still had several games with problems), so I just removed it.

I don't use it on my 4400+ or 4800+ systems and they expiereince no problems but, my 3800+ had quircks in games and music/video files......the optimizer when installed fixed it. All are on nForce 4 boards and same cores so not sure what caused the difference.....

I installed it after I installled the driver. I have not noticed anything different so I have not idea if it's really working.

Somebody with an X2, play an older game like cs 1.6 or Dues Ex or Diable II or something and confirm that they play alright. I think that will give me a good idea.

My kids play Dues Ex and Diablo 2 quite a bit yet with their friends as well as BF and COD on their 4400+ X2 system without the patch and expiereince no problems whatsoever. Only my wifes 3800+ X2 has the problem and needs the patch. With the patch installed, it plays fine like the 4400+ and 4800+.........

All the Unreal-based games including Deus Ex stutter and run at the wrong speed if I run them normally, and this optimizer thing didn't change that (I have the normal AMD driver and the MS hotfix installed). There is a program called TaskAssign that fixes the problem, although I have to remember to open that up before I start these games. This is on a 165.

System Shock 2 also initially had problems with crashing, but there is an SMP patch for that which fixes them.

Maybe the reason you don't have problems is the fact that you bought a later revision of these X2 processors?

So is there any problem with installing the dual core optimizer and the windows XP hotfix?
