Yesterday I got my first ATI/AMD card ever after many years using nVidia. This is an MSI R6670. I'm only a casual gamer at best and this card is about the most powerful you can get without needing a PCIe power connector - though power is not a problem as a have a 650 watt PS and my old GF7900GS was running fine and its MUCH more power hungry than the 6670. After constant freeze ups and trying a number of different ATI drivers I couldn't make the problems go away.
Finally I noticed that the driver install package was installing various components that said they were for video trans-coding and hardware acceleration of certain functions. I'm using a three monitor configuration with two on the ATI card and one in the motherboard's DVI connector. I started wondering if there was a conflict with Intel's onboard functionality so I once again completely uninstalled all the AMD software and re-installed it again but this time selected only the actual video driver from the package - nothing else. Suddenly the problems went away and its stable.
FYI there really is a difference in video conversion speeds when converting on the monitor connected to the Intel Sandy Bridge video. Using the converted included in Roxio 11 (which I used because Intel specifically lists it as compatible) my test video in .AVI was converted to mpg4 consistently about 30% faster on the Intel Graphics.
Unfortunately this card is really loud. I installed MSI's after burner utility and adjusted the fan speed profile but even when Afterburner is showing the fan running at a low speed its really loud and there is no change in sound. It appears to me that the fan speed is not being properly reported and is probably actually at 100% all the time.
