AMD drivers on Windows 8

Hi everyone,

Last night I was going about the initial setup of Windows 8 on a computer in a box for a friend. All was going great until I went about the CCC from AMD. I usually go and check for any available driver updates. I was very surprised when the tool told me that there weren't any. I checked up the display driver version and it was very old, dating back to summer 2012. No big deal, I'll go directly to the AMD website and download the last catalyst suite for Windows 8.

Things turned for the weird in the installation process. I ran the tool, but I was very surprised to find that, after the hardware detection phase, no graphic part was detected... ??? This is a computer sporting a Trinity AMD processeur, namely an A8-5500 with its HD7300 series graphic chip. I even checked in the device manager and the graphic part was detected. However, the driver was still at a very early version.

Now my uneducated guess is that AMD has still to release a proper graphic driver for Windows 8 and that it currently refuse to update that part of the APU with the reste of the Catalyst driver software. Am I wrong ? And if so, what should I do to make the Catalyst software detect the graphic part of this fine APU.

I have the impression the display driver used is the default driver from Microsoft.

Thanks,
Simon.
