AMD doubles CPU prices

Opteron 152 chip was priced at $417. Today, it costs $799.
The 150 and 148 saw similar price jumps: from $278 to $367 (a 32 per cent increase) and from $218 to $263 (20.6 per cent), respectively. The 146's price rose a more modest 2.8 per cent, from $178 on Monday to $183 on Tuesday.

The higher prices are for socket 939 Opterons. They had to raise the prices to match the current prices on equivalent A64s. If the 152 was $417 then who would buy the FX-55 at $800. 150 is slightly cheaper than the 4000+ and the same is true for the 148 and the 3700+. Now, the 146 and 144 are probably going to be the new chips to buy, since they pretty much match the 3200+ and the 3000+ in price (respectively) but have twice the cache.

EDIT: The socket 940 opterons 100s are just very cheap (hell, the 252 is like $620 right now) compared to A64s and the price difference between the highest-end and its close followers is much less than on the desktop side.

EDIT2: Now that I think about it A64 (no FX) prices were actually dropped by about the same amount, so they probably just averaged the price for 940 Opteron 100s and A64 San Diegos to get the new price for both.

The FX55 has unlocked multipliers, do the Opterons? You pay a premium for the FX...

However this poses an interesting quesiton, as to how well these 939 Opterons might be overclocked. If the 1.8GHz 939 Opteron has 1MB of cache and can overclock just as well as the 3000+ counterpart...hmm...

Although you no longer need registered memory, I think you still need ECC...which kinda ruins things...

Yes, the FX series has unlocked multipliers but having a san diego rated for 2.8 (as the Opteron 154 will be) sell for less than the FX wpuld destroy the FX's sales. I mean, the reason to get an FX is 'cause they're cherry-picked (they have to be, since they run at 2.8 at stock volts), most overclockers out there would just save a few hundred bucks and overclock the regular way (hell, having to raise your clock speed in 200MHz steps is not that great once you get close to the limit, anyway). I just hope AMD drops the prices for FXs eventually. A $550-600 FX-55 would be so great.

ECC was never a requirement for the Opterons only registered memory was (i believe don't flame me if i am wrong). What I am interested in seeing is the 2.0 GHz Dual core core, we may have found our X2 4000+.
