AMD demos 1.5 GHz Palomino - No fans allowed in

AMD likes to keep their new products reasonably well under wraps, so it isn't surprising that no fans have yet seen this new chip.

However, this isn't the type of fan that I'm thinking of - I'm thinking of the type that spin and pump air. :)

Apparently, AMD's new 1.5 GHz CPU doesn't need a fan to cool it, a simple heatsink is good enough. Apparently, this is on the Austin Aluminium process (rather than on Dresden's copper process).

Check out the link below for more info.

hmmm that sounds very cool, does it perform better than the p4 1.5's?? fanless processors, Intel really does have a tough time coming up

If it will really be able to run at stock speed without a fan, just think how far we will be able to overclock that monster with a good cooling system!!

WHOA! That will be FREAKING amazing if that's true.

Yes if this is true then the possibilities are astounding. Or even with a small quiet 21dBa Panaflow is acceptable, imagine the scalability with the monster heatsinks.

even a athlon tb 1.2 GHz performs in most cases better then a 1.4 Ghz P4 :)

so dont worry :)

Gimme a FOP38 and overclock the hell out of it!!!

P.S. Leo V gotta love this biatch.

Well even Intel's own P3 1 Ghz processor outperforms the 1.4 Ghz P4 in most cases. Who's to say Palomino is to outperform the Thunderbird?

I'll stop worrying when I see some damn benchmarks!

But, at 1.5GHz it still dissipates almost 100W of thermal energy, imagine having one such light bulb in your case...

The Palomino is just a Thunderbird with a better branch predictor and perhaps a larger cache. There are no really fundamental architectual changes. Performance per clock should eb equal or greater.

To quote Futurama, interesting if true :)

Well a mobile Palomino Athlon is on AMD roadmap for 2001, certainly this bit of news would be in line with those plans. Hopefully also following enhancements are there in Palomino so it can really whoop P4's arse on all fronts:
- 128bit or 256bit datapath to L2 cache
- full implementation of SSE or even better, SSE2
- built-in temperature diode w/ overheat protection

naw if ya read the news snippet the pure silicon aint expnsive, 10 bux per chip, or was it per wafer, cheaper than heatsink and fan, and if they make it compatible with present sockets and present heat sinks, even better, and if they make it so you don't chip em any more. . . and no external capacitors. . . . that'd be even better, any sites have actual chips yet? how long till we see em?

I really hope we get a thermal diode. I don't think the Palomino will outperform the Tbird. I think all the performance enhancements will be made in the thoroughbred core.

Interesting. If it's true, then we'll have to wait and see if it's because the chip runs cool or whether it can tolerate bizarre amounts of heat.

hmmm , and they had all those apple g4 cube knockoffs at comdex too..., i can see where this is going. I've heard lots of the big OEM systems are being designed fanless now, with liquid change gel setups, like toshiba laptops. Quiet computers rock.

What amd failed to mention was that the heatsink being used in the demo wasnt your average heatsink, it was the following one ;)
