I'm in the planning stages of a new system and am wondering how this downgrading of memory speeds should affect what RAM I should buy.
As for the system, I'm most likely going with a AM2+ 940. First and foremost it'll be for gaming. I'm not planning on overclocking any time soon, but may do so a few years down the line before it time for another upgrade.
As for my choice of memory, I plan on starting off with a standard 2x2gig combo and then adding a second combo later when needed, hence the concern.
So assuming I go for a full 4 sticks of RAM and eventually run into this problem, what speed of RAM should I get? Is there any sense in buying higher speed RAM if its just going to get slowed down? Should I buy 1066 speed for the first set and then just 800 for the second set? (assuming they're compatible sets of course)
Will my choice of a motherboard (and therefor the BIOS) have any effect/difference?
I'm assuming the performance gap between the two will be hardly noticeable for a vanilla user such as myself, but the cheapo miser in me just wants to ask the question
