I just need to start reading more. I had looked for a possible laptop purchase, and went to Asus tech support to ask questions. They assured me that AMD processor was not as good a processor as as is the core 2. That set me up for believing the techie in that chat room.

Thanks for setting me straight.

Core 2 is the way to go in most cases these days, so the Asus guys were mostly correct in making that statement, but that doesn't change the fact that the so called techie is full of crap.
Not that A64's are bad either, they're very fine processors with a healthy ecosystem of motherboard manufacturers, etc etc, no one with a clue should have any problem putting together a quality AMD system these days.

God this thread makes my head hurt...

There is no way for AMD to "overclock" it's CPUs... whatever clock rate they ship the CPU with IS the default clock rate... DUH.

Use your brain.

I remember these threads on other forums I frequented about six years ago. It's amazing that some people still believe it.

What Asus tech support meant by that was simply, Core 2 is the fastest on the market.

Like others have said, core 2 duo is faster. But until core 2 duo came out, X2's were dominating the pentium-d's. I worked for Intel at the time and used my bonus to buy an X2..that should tell ya something.

The Core 2 Duo is the fastest, but if you don't overclock then they perform about the same for a given amount of money. Also, AMD's motherboards have been a lot better - for instance look at all the problems with the 865 chipset (my motherboard included, which didn't work well until several BIOS updates). If overclocking is not a factor, then the Athlons are still competitive. The Core 2 Duo's are just a LOT better once you overlock them.

let me guess he's a techie for one of the major electronics store? no offense to anyone here if yo do work at one, but the majority of those guys are idiots.

I've never had any problems using quite a few different Core2 boards for builds... I usually don't have any MB problems, as I predominantly use ASUS (I've never had any problems with X2 boards either).

AMD, and Intel both have great CPU's. If I were to build a computer from the ground up, I'd build a C2D. If I were going to reuse even just the DDR. I'd build an AX2.

Truth is, unless you overclock, you won't see any difference between CPU's. Both CPU's are fast, stable, and have great MB's.

Uh yeah. I once had one tell me that the best way to remove a virus was to run an anti-body program. Apparently they're different from regular anti-virus programs, they're l33t.

He was wearing an intel t-shirt.

So just to toy with him, I asked him which processor was faster, a C2D or FX. He proceeded to tell me that hyper threading makes the C2D about 10x faster. I laughed in his face and told him to get a job at McDonalds.
