Amd cpu

And the ML / MT amd's ? I am getting my first laptop,for business only and was hoping to get a think pad from the closest Office Depot,they seem to be out of stock,also the think pads seem dated in their config.I see Compaqs and Toshiba's with a more robust feature set.
 
AMD64-based chip ~= 0.9 * Pentium M clock speed (excluding dual cores)

It is fair to say that roughly an AMD64 based chip (i.e. Sempron, Turion, Athlon 64 laptop chips) are equivalent to a Pentium M (Dothan) clocked about 10% lower. So a 2GHz AMD chip would perform near the same as a 1.8GHz Dothan, roughly. Keep in mind that each architecture has its strong & weak points, so you will see those fluctuations in performance.

Overall you can't go wrong with any of the chips. Turion & Dothan are pretty evenly matched, more base the decision on the rest of the notebook's features.

However when looking at budget, Celeron M (also Dothan, but without speedstep) vs Sempron; I'd have to say pick the Celeron M. Based on a recent notebook roundup AT did, two near exact Compaq notebooks showed the Celeron M leading in battery life while they were comparable in performance.
