So i have a phenom ii x2 555 and it used to be able to unlock to a quad but about 5 months ago when i was troubleshooting another issue, i reset my BIOS and i could never get it to unlock back to a quad and i did everything the same way. I just thought i'd ask if you guys think it's the CPU or motherboard that is doing this? it's an MSI 870-G45 so it's a possibility i blew the VRM's.

Have you changed / upgraded the BIOS since you had it working as a quad core?

It is possible MSI removed that ability in a later BIOS revision to acquiesce to AMD?

What was the other issue?

It was a hard drive issue or maybe it was the sata controller, i forgot exactly how i fixed it but it's good now. I think my mobo may be dying

You rock nenforcer,, I used to have same mobo. GB, gl,
nenforcer?

You should be getting bunch of BSOD's if its your motherboard or RAM .. gl

If you dont see these, your mobo and RAM are ok.
Man I think you should have just bought a ASUS or Gigabyte the 2 top companies imo... and call it a decade, literally
Im thinking a few BIOS flash. Do research on yours see if it has newer BIOS. Well see,,
