So seeing as the AMD 939 line of CPU are dying off, and having a good old excellent ASUS A8V Deluxe mobo + 4 GB DDR

i wonder if it's worth upgrading to a X2 4800+ , FX60 or Opteron 185, currently i still have the good old 3800+ single core

Opteron 185 by far is the cheapest of the 3 yet it performs at the FX60 speed

for the price i'll be paying for a 4800+ i might as well get the FX60

they have been considerably lowered the price, before the FX60 use to be in the $999 range, now they are less than $400

or perhaps spend only like $90 on the X2 4200+ ?

i'm souping up my car as well, LOL  so trying to save some $$$ :D

yet now it's the best time to buy those CPUs before they become even harder to find. ;)

the FX60/Opteron 185 perfom the same as the Duo2Core 6600, for just about the same price as the 6600

so... not bad.

the main reason is the Mobo, i love this Mobo, i can run up to 8 HDD in this single board

whomever designed this Gamer board, was thinking big, was thinking Server

which is exactly what i'm planning to turn it into, a Game and Multimedia Server

that way all the old SATA drives will be off loaded to this old Rig, meanwhile i keep the latest and greatest on my main system.

I agree, get the cheapest dual-core Opteron you can buy. They all seem to overclock really well.

i would get the x2 4200 - you should be able to hit 2.5GHz pretty easy, i know my x2 3800 did at stock V and was very stable.

and i wouldn't worry to much about all the hdd connections, w/ 1TB hdds i can have a lot of storage space w/ just 1 connector :)

true server m/b are much different than what we use in our rigs (for the most part) as they usually require different cpus, have multiple cpu sockets, require different ram, have better chipsets and meant for 24/7/years of service, just an fyi, but for a home server, i am sure it will work fine :)

The CPUs are cheap and there is plenty of life left in 939. I'm running an opteron 165 clocked up to 2.7GHz right now (eventually now that I have watercooling I'll go higher, just haven't gotten around to it). So heck yes I'd get an opteron or something like that, keep that 939 rig going :)
