AMD CPU Socket 939 vs AM2

939 is "old technology," it uses DDR memory instead of AM2's DDR2. AM2 uses 940 pins, but it is a different pinout than the Opteron (and old-school FX) socket 940, that's why it's called AM2 instead of keeping it at socket 940.
Right now, either platform will work just fine, you really don't need (meaning probably won't notice) the added bandwidth of DDR2, though if you're thinking of the future and Vista and all that, you may want to go with AM2 since Vista is going to be such a hardware beast.
Anyway, because of DDR2's lower voltages it'll suck less power and should run cooler, but again, I really doubt you'll notice the difference.
Both 939 and AM2 can use dual-channel memory by the way, it's socket 754 that is limited to single-channel DDR.

Thnaks for the info. I'm assuming that because AM2 is newer it'll end up costing more money. So it's probably not worth the money to go with a AM2 instead of the 939 socket is what your saying?

He never said anything of the sort. Besides, it's easy to check prices.

Actually, I believe that AM2 and DDR2 parts are cheaper, since they are in higher production than 939 which is becoming EOL'd, and DDR no longer being the current memory of both Intel and AMD.

Also one major point is, AM3 processors will be able to run on AM2 mobo's.

That's an assumption.

Didn't AMD specifically say that they will? BIOS updates will probably be all that prevents it in some cases.

they did, but intel said the older 975 boards would work with c2d....
