AMD CPU Drivers

I am running an X2 4800 with WinXP 32bit (going to install 64bit on another partition so anything here that applies to it also let me know).

The AMD driver seems to be needed only if I want to use CoolnQuiet but otherwise does not do anything, correct? So if I am not insterested in CnQ don't bother?

The MS hotfix changes how XP controls threads to help 'smooth things out" but seems to really only apply to games. It also requires CnQ to be installed/running. Does it help multithreaded apps also somehow?

I do some gaming on this system but use it as my main workstation, I use several multithreaded apps and want the best performance possible (don't we all). I am not interested in CnQ really. This is a new install so I am not sure if I have any issues in games yet but I can set it to one core if needed. I have the system OCed just a touch (about 60MHz), I might mess with for a higher one later.

Thanks in advance.

The X2 driver seems to help even without C&Q, and the hotfix doesn't need it either to fix some of the problems. I would install the X2 driver, but I wouldn't bother getting the microsoft hotfix unless you have any noticable problems. I have the X2 drivers installed, but not the hotfix, as I haven't experienced any of the symptoms people were having. I don't use C&Q since I am overclocking. I did have to install the hotfix with my Pentium-D however as I was having a lot of problems there.

Thanks stevty2889, what does the AMD driver seem to help if you are not using CnQ?

I never experienced it myself, but the X2 driver fixed some peoples stuttering in games, and the hotfix if done correctly fixed the rest. I installed the X2 driver right away and never tried to run without it, but I haven't had any of the problems or symptoms others have had, or any of the problems I've had with my Pentium-D, which just got retired today, because it refused to cooperate.
