Was wondering if anyone has enabled this on their rigs or seen an article about the difference it makes on modern cpus. Thanks.
 
Not entirely sure what you're trying to ask.
Do you mean in terms of performance or something else?

My 939 X2 4200+ goes from ~135w system idle to ~145w system idle when I disable it. Can't say I've had any issues in games.
CPU is not overclocked.


I have enabled the power icon thing despite it being a desktop so I can (if I desire) quickly switch between CnQ being active or disabled by changing between Home/Office Desk and Minimal Power Management or Max Battery (I also have them set to turn my monitor off after different amounts of time).
 
I have it active because I have issues with my system overheating, but I haven't done any tests on it to tell if it is working correctly or not.
 
I've used it once when there was 42 C outside a couple of days in a row and I had no air conditioning, but I had problems with it and left it disabled. I've undervolted it after that and it worked better. I usually don't care about these power saving features at both Intel and AMD, since I always run them overclocked. 😉

However, since my computer is overclocked, I'm having a much better time using CrystalCPUID to control the multipliers and voltage settings.

I've been wanting to know if there was a large drop in wattage and temp or if it was minimal.

Eight degrees is some serious difference. What are the normal temps and is this just using C&Q by itself?
 
My #2 system seems to really make use of it very well. At idle vcore is .9. The fans aren't turning. System is cold. I use C1E and Speedstep on sys #1. Don't have a meter so I don't know the difference. I'm not OC'ing the AMD 45w system so it's nice and stable all the time. Speedstep on the IP35-E works very nicely and keeps temps very low at idle and keeps the fan control and fans spinning slowly. I love the fact that at idle I'm still using less volts and power than stock with power saving features off. I still get the huge performance boost from being overclocked -- I just spare the CPU the extra voltage and heat when I'm not gaming or encoding. Win/win, IMHO.

What kind of temp difference does it make on your #2 rig?
 
I'd love to give a clear answer but my temperature situation is skewed in the sense that the office here has insanely powerful air conditioning. Both Coretemp and the Biostar HW monitor utility show the machine running 17-19C on idle and 30C under full load.

In BIOS, status monitor page shows the CPU at 21C when the fans are going full bore and 24 when at 900rpm.

Using stock AMD cooler that came with it, all aluminum. Stock thermal grease.
 
No, I currently use EIST. 😉 But, yes, I've used it in the past and it worked as advertised for me.

Crap, that was a typo. Sorry. The difference is actually around 4-5°C. Something like 33-34°C idle without CQ and 28-30°C with CQ on. Both idle temperatures. But then, I have a pretty well ventilated case and we're in the middle of winter here so... your mileage may vary.

That's with a ThermalTake Mini Typhoon fan, set with Arctic Silver 5 and usually running at very low speeds. (600-800 RPM)

Also, keep in mind this is a Manchester core X2. These get really hot.
 
Im seeing on a accasional thred that C&Q works fine with X2's but has some issues with Phenom's.

Well, I enabled C&Q and it cut my Phenom X3 speed in half and dropped the vcore to 1.05 which resulted in a 5 degree drop in temps which seems pretty good to me.
 
And the beauty of it all is that you're basically underclocking your CPU 90% of the time and still keeping that overclock the 10 percent of the time you need it.
